Junior Account Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides junior account manager recruitment as part of our wider account manager recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A junior account manager may support senior colleagues, manage smaller customer accounts independently or combine both.Within a supplier or importer, a junior account manager may coordinate customer briefs, samples, costs and delivery. Within a brand or wholesale business, responsibilities may centre on customer relationships, sales activity and account development. Before recruitment starts, we establish which customers the junior account manager will work with, what they will own, which decisions they can make and where senior support or approval remains.Key Takeaways

Junior account manager responsibility varies. The role may involve supporting senior colleagues, managing smaller accounts independently or combining both.

The boundary with account manager is not universal. Progression involves changes in customer ownership, commercial accountability, independence and decision-making authority.

A recommendation needs evidence of capability and potential. We assess customer responsibility, commercial contribution and decisions made. The candidate considers the opportunity and agrees to representation before we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Junior Account Manager Responsibility Begin?
Customer contact does not establish account ownership. Some junior account managers support senior colleagues across several customers. Others manage smaller accounts, although pricing, margin or changes to commercial terms may still require approval.A junior account manager may coordinate a revised delivery date and keep the customer informed. Approving additional freight costs or changing the customer's commercial terms may remain with a senior colleague. If you need someone to manage customer accounts independently, experience coordinating orders or communicating with customers may not demonstrate that capability. We establish which accounts the junior account manager will manage, what decisions require approval and what outcomes they are expected to deliver.
What Changes Between Junior Account Manager and Account Manager?
Progression generally involves greater independent responsibility for customer accounts and commercial outcomes.A junior account manager may manage smaller customers, negotiate within agreed limits or monitor sales performance. Another may be developing these capabilities while supporting a senior colleague. An established account manager generally carries responsibility for customer relationships, account plans, sales or margin performance and account decisions.Progression may involve greater negotiation authority, responsibility for sales or margin, ownership of account plans or resolving problems without senior approval. Managing larger customers is not the only measure.Experience from buying, import merchandising, product development, sales or another customer-facing role may provide a route into junior account management. We consider what someone has demonstrated, what they could develop and the support available in the proposed role.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Junior Account Manager?
We establish whether the employer needs someone to support established accounts, manage smaller customers independently or combine both.We clarify the customer portfolio, sales or margin expectations, product or delivery responsibilities and decisions requiring senior approval. We then examine the work candidates have carried out: customer conversations handled, sales or margin information used, orders progressed, problems resolved and decisions made.Experience from another fashion or lifestyle function may transfer. We assess what transfers, what remains untested and what the employer can support the person to develop.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

Does a junior account manager manage their own customers?
Yes. Some junior account managers manage smaller customer accounts independently. Others support senior colleagues across several accounts. Pricing changes, commercial negotiations or delivery commitments may still require senior approval.
Can someone become a junior account manager from another fashion role?
Yes. Experience in buying, import merchandising, product development, sales or another customer-facing role may provide a route into junior account management. The employer's requirements determine which capabilities transfer and what support the person needs.
What is the difference between a junior account manager and an account manager?
An account manager generally carries greater independent responsibility for customer relationships, commercial performance and decisions. A junior account manager may manage smaller accounts within defined limits or with senior support.
Hiring a Junior Account Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about the customers involved, the responsibility you need someone to take and the support available.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Junior Account Manager Role?
Start a conversation about your experience, the responsibilities you've carried and where you'd like to progress.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Account Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior account manager recruitment as part of our wider account manager recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A senior account manager may manage larger or more complex customer accounts, carry responsibility for sales and margin, and negotiate pricing, commercial terms and customer agreements. Some senior account managers mentor or manage colleagues. Others concentrate on customer accounts without managing a team. Before recruitment starts, we establish which customers the senior account manager will manage, the commercial decisions they will make and where approval remains with others.Key Takeaways

Seniority involves account complexity and commercial accountability. Senior account managers may manage larger customers, negotiate terms, carry responsibility for sales or margin and resolve customer problems.

Senior does not automatically mean people management. The role may include mentoring, line management, both or neither. Responsibility for customers and commercial decisions remains central.

A recommendation requires evidence of responsibility carried. We assess account ownership, negotiations, financial decisions and leadership where required. The candidate considers the opportunity and agrees to representation before we recommend them to the client.

What Makes an Account Manager Role Senior Level?
Account size does not establish seniority on its own.A senior account manager may manage major customers, negotiate commercial terms, take responsibility for account profitability and resolve problems involving several departments.Within a supplier or importer, senior account management may involve product development, pricing, factory capacity and delivery commitments. Within a brand or wholesale business, responsibilities may include account plans, sales growth, distribution, trade terms and margin performance.Consider a customer requesting a price reduction while production costs are increasing. One account manager may gather information, discuss options with the customer and refer the decision to a commercial director. Another may negotiate within agreed margin limits and approve the revised terms. Both have negotiation experience. Their decision authority differs. We establish which customers the senior account manager will own, the sales or margin targets involved and where authority to negotiate or approve terms sits.
What Changes Between Account Manager and Senior Account Manager?
Progression involves greater account complexity, financial accountability and decision-making authority. An established account manager may already own customer relationships, negotiate terms and deliver account plans.A senior account manager may manage customers with more complex requirements, negotiate within wider financial limits or resolve problems involving sales, merchandising, production and finance. The distinction lies in the accounts managed, decisions made, responsibility for sales or margin and consequences when customer problems arise.Leadership is a separate consideration. Some senior account managers mentor junior colleagues, review their work or manage a team. Others remain responsible for their customer portfolios without direct reports.A move towards head of account management may introduce responsibility for wider account strategy, team performance and resources. Not every senior account manager role leads towards functional leadership.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Senior Account Manager?
We establish the customer portfolio, account complexity, sales or margin expectations, negotiation authority and leadership requirements. We then examine what candidates have delivered and which decisions they were responsible for: account plans, revenue or margin performance, negotiations, customer problems and commercial approvals.Participation in a negotiation does not establish decision authority. We assess whether the candidate gathered information, recommended terms, negotiated within agreed limits or approved the final decision.Where leadership forms part of the role, we establish whether the candidate has mentored colleagues, managed people or carried responsibility for team results. Supporting colleagues does not establish line management experience. We also explore the candidate's expectations around customer accounts, commercial targets, decision authority and leadership.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What makes an account manager senior?
A senior account manager generally manages larger or more complex customer accounts and carries greater responsibility for negotiations, sales or margin and commercial decisions. The level of authority and financial accountability distinguishes the role from an established account manager.
Does a senior account manager manage a team?
Not necessarily. Some senior account managers mentor colleagues or manage people. Others manage complex customer accounts without direct reports. The employer's structure determines whether leadership is required.
What is the difference between a senior account manager and head of account management?
A senior account manager generally carries responsibility for customer accounts and their commercial performance. A head of account management may lead the wider function, including account strategy, team performance and resources. The distinction depends on the business.
Hiring a Senior Account Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about the customers involved, the commercial responsibility and the decisions your senior account manager will need to make.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Account Manager Role?
Start a conversation about the accounts you've managed, the commercial decisions you've made and where you'd like to progress.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Recruitment services for heads of account management and fashion businesses across the UK.

Head of Account Management Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides head of account management recruitment as part of our wider account manager recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A head of account management is responsible for the performance of a business's account management function, including customer relationships, account strategy, revenue, margins and team performance. The role normally involves managing account managers or a wider commercial team. Some heads of account management also retain responsibility for key customer accounts. Before recruitment starts, we establish the account portfolio, commercial targets, leadership responsibilities and decision authority.Key Takeaways

Head of account management carries functional accountability. Responsibility extends beyond individual customers to the performance of the wider account portfolio, commercial priorities and account management team.

The balance between leadership and account ownership varies. The role normally includes direct reports, although some heads of account management continue to manage key customers and lead major negotiations.

A recommendation requires evidence of functional leadership. We assess commercial accountability, account strategy, people management and decisions made. The candidate considers the opportunity and agrees to representation before we recommend them to the client.

What Does a Head of Account Management Take Responsibility For?
The role extends beyond managing individual customer accounts.A head of account management may set account priorities, oversee revenue and margins, lead negotiations and allocate responsibilities.Within a supplier or importer, the role may involve customer profitability, pricing, product development commitments, production capacity and delivery performance. Within a brand or wholesale business, responsibility may centre on account strategy, distribution, sales performance and commercial agreements.Budget ownership and P&L accountability may also form part of the role, depending on the business. A major customer requesting lower prices and revised delivery terms may affect margins, production capacity and commitments to other customers.A senior account manager may negotiate within agreed limits. The head of account management must consider the consequences across the account portfolio before agreeing a course of action. We establish which decisions sit with the head of account management and which require approval from a sales director, commercial director, managing director or business owner.
What Changes Between Senior Account Manager and Head of Account Management?
The distinction is responsibility for the performance of the account management function.A senior account manager may manage complex customers, negotiate commercial terms and lead colleagues while remaining accountable for their own customer portfolio.Unlike a senior account manager whose responsibility may centre on individual customers, the head is accountable for the wider portfolio and the people managing it.Functional leadership involves resolving problems across accounts, developing colleagues and deciding how account management resources are allocated.Reporting arrangements vary. A head of account management may report to a sales director, commercial director, managing director or owner, depending on business size and structure. We establish the boundaries between account management leadership, sales direction and wider commercial authority before defining the role.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Head of Account Management?
A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We establish the employer's account portfolio, financial expectations, decision authority and leadership requirements. We examine the account strategies candidates have developed, the commercial results they've been responsible for and the decisions they've made. Managing major customers does not establish experience of leading an account management function. We assess people management experience and responsibility for team performance, including the balance between leadership and key account ownership where required.Having assessed and qualified the candidates, we decide who we're prepared to recommend. The candidate decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What does a head of account management do?
A head of account management leads the account management function, with responsibility for the wider customer portfolio, commercial performance and team. The role may also include managing key accounts, leading negotiations and overseeing budgets or P&L performance.
Does a Head of Account Management still manage customer accounts?
Yes. Some heads of account management retain responsibility for key customers alongside leading the wider team. The balance depends on the size of the business, account portfolio and available management resources.
What is the difference between a senior account manager and head of account management?
A senior account manager generally carries responsibility for complex customer accounts and their commercial performance. A head of account management carries accountability for the wider account management function, including account priorities, team performance and commercial results.
Hiring a Head of Account Management?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about your account portfolio, commercial priorities, leadership requirements and the decisions the role needs to carry.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Head of Account Management Role?
Start a conversation about the accounts and teams you've led, your commercial responsibilities and what you're looking for next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Head of Account Management Hiring

Head of

Recruitment services for account managers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Account Manager Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire account managers across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers. The account manager title does not establish which customers someone manages, the commercial responsibility they carry or which decisions they can make. One account manager may own customer relationships, negotiate terms and deliver account plans. Another may coordinate customers, product development and orders while commercial approvals sit elsewhere. Before recruitment starts, we establish the customers involved, what the account manager needs to deliver, which decisions sit with them and where responsibility is shared.Key Takeaways

Account management connects customers, products and commercial decisions. Responsibilities may include customer relationships, sales, margins, pricing, product development, orders and delivery, depending on the business.

Account manager responsibility changes by level. Junior, account manager, senior and head of account management roles differ through customer ownership, account complexity, financial accountability, decision authority and leadership.

A recommendation requires evidence behind the job title. We assess the accounts candidates have managed, the decisions they've made, the responsibility they've carried and what they want next. If our assessment supports the recommendation, and they agree to representation, we recommend them to the client.

What Does an Account Manager Take Responsibility For?
An account manager manages customer relationships and contributes to the commercial and operational requirements of those accounts. Responsibilities may include account planning, customer meetings, sales reporting, negotiating terms, product development coordination, order management and resolving delivery problems.Customer contact, account ownership and commercial authority are different responsibilities. An account manager may communicate directly with a major retailer without owning the commercial relationship. Negotiating delivery changes does not necessarily include authority to approve additional costs.Responsibility for sales targets does not establish authority to change prices or margins. The business model determines where these responsibilities sit.Within a supplier or importer, an account manager may work with retail buying teams on customer briefs, samples, costing, orders and delivery commitments. Managing the account may require coordination with import merchandising, product development, production and garment technology.Within a brand or wholesale business, responsibilities may centre on selling collections, developing customer accounts, distribution, sales forecasts, trading terms and account growth. Some positions combine product and delivery coordination with commercial responsibility. Others place these activities with separate teams.A customer requesting a price reduction illustrates why decision authority matters. The account manager may gather costing information, negotiate within agreed limits, recommend alternative terms or approve the agreement. These are different levels of responsibility.Account managers may also work across fashion, accessories, footwear, beauty and homeware. Product knowledge, customer requirements and routes to market can change the experience needed. The recruitment question is what the person has managed, negotiated, delivered and decided, and which decisions required approval.
How Does Account Manager Responsibility Change by Level?
Account management careers develop through customer ownership, account complexity, commercial accountability, decision authority and leadership. The titles overlap. Progression does not follow one fixed sequence, and managing people is not a requirement at every senior level.

A junior account manager may support senior colleagues, manage smaller customers independently or combine both. Pricing, margin or significant customer commitments may remain subject to approval. Progression depends on the account responsibility and decisions already carried.

An established account manager may independently manage customer relationships, deliver account plans, negotiate within agreed limits and take responsibility for sales or margin performance. The remit varies between supplier, importer, brand and wholesale businesses.

A senior account manager may manage larger or more complex customers, negotiate within wider financial limits and resolve problems involving several departments. Greater commercial accountability is central. The role may involve mentoring, line management, both or neither.

A head of account management normally takes responsibility for the wider customer portfolio and the people managing it. The role may cover account strategy, revenue, margins, team performance, resource allocation and major negotiations. Some heads retain direct responsibility for key customers.

Managing major accounts does not establish experience of leading an account management function. Equally, managing a team does not establish the commercial authority required for every head of account management role. These distinctions help establish the vacancy and the evidence needed from candidates. For more detail, read our dedicated recruitment pages for:

Junior Account Managers

Senior Account Managers

Heads of Account Management

Account Manager Salaries
Account manager salaries reflect customer ownership, commercial responsibility, account complexity, product category, location and leadership requirements. Typical salary ranges across parts of the UK fashion and lifestyle sector include:

Junior Account Manager: £25,000–£32,000

Account Manager: £32,000–£45,000

Senior Account Manager: £45,000–£60,000

Head of Account Management: £60,000–£90,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026.Salary ranges are indicative. Any salary offered must reflect contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation starts with establishing the customers, account responsibilities, commercial expectations and decision authority involved. We consider the business model, product category, customer portfolio, reporting structure and where responsibility sits across sales, merchandising, product development and production. We then speak with candidates about the customers they've managed, their commercial contribution, the decisions they've made and what they want from their next role.We examine account plans developed, sales or margin responsibility, negotiations led, customer problems resolved and commercial decisions approved. Participating in a negotiation does not establish authority to approve the outcome. For candidates moving from buying, import merchandising, product development, sales or another customer-facing function, we assess which capabilities transfer and which responsibilities remain untested.Where the brief includes leadership, we distinguish mentoring colleagues, managing people and carrying accountability for team performance. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. If our assessment supports the recommendation, and they agree, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard. That recommendation is Encore Recruitment's assessment. The hiring decision remains with the client and candidate.Explore how the Recommendation Standard sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What does an account manager do in fashion and lifestyle?
An account manager manages customer relationships and may take responsibility for sales, account plans, commercial negotiations, product development coordination, orders and delivery. The remit depends on the business model, customers and decisions assigned to the role.
What is the difference between an account manager and an import merchandiser?
An account manager generally concentrates on customer relationships, account development and commercial requirements. An import merchandiser generally concentrates on progressing products and orders through suppliers, production and delivery. The roles may overlap, particularly within fashion suppliers and importers.
Can account managers progress into head of account management roles?
Yes. Progression may involve moving from responsibility for individual customer accounts to accountability for the wider portfolio, commercial strategy and team. Experience managing major accounts does not automatically establish functional leadership capability.
Hiring an Account Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about the customers involved, the commercial responsibility and the decisions this person needs to make.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Account Manager Role?
Start a conversation about the customers you've managed, the commercial responsibility you've carried and what you want from your next role.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Recruitment services for buyer admin assistants (BAA) and fashion businesses across the UK.

Buyer Admin Assistant (BAA) Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides buyer admin assistant (BAA) recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Buyer admin assistants help keep product, supplier and order activity moving while wider commercial decisions sit elsewhere in the buying team. Before recruitment starts, we establish what someone needs to manage, where checking or approval remains necessary and what responsibility could develop with experience.Key Takeaways

Buying responsibility starts with the detail that keeps the process moving. A buyer admin assistant may manage information, coordination and follow-up without deciding the range, quantities or commercial terms.

The title does not define the remit. Buyer admin assistant and buying assistant can describe similar roles in one business and different levels of product or supplier responsibility in another.

A recommendation needs evidence of buyer admin assistant capability. Encore Recruitment looks for accuracy, organisation, communication, follow-through and when someone knows to ask for support, alongside what they may need to learn in the role. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Does a Buyer Admin Assistant Need to Contribute From the Start?
A buyer admin assistant does not always need previous buying experience. Some businesses want buying administration or placement experience. Others may place more weight on relevant study, retail experience or evidence of accuracy, organisation and follow-through.The role may involve working with product information, purchase orders, samples, spreadsheets and critical-path dates while communicating clearly with suppliers and colleagues. What matters is whether the person can handle the information, coordination and follow-up the role requires. Previous buying experience may provide that evidence. It is not the only route. We look at what someone has already been responsible for, the information they have worked with, how they have maintained accuracy and how they have kept activity moving when priorities changed.
What Does a Buyer Admin Assistant Support, and What Do They Decide?
A buyer admin assistant can take responsibility for important parts of the buying process without owning every commercial decision. They may raise or update purchase orders, maintain product information, organise samples, follow up with suppliers, track dates and prepare information for range or trading meetings. The boundary matters.Updating an order is different from deciding the quantity. Preparing product or competitor information is different from choosing the range. Following up with a supplier does not necessarily mean agreeing cost or commercial terms.Buyer assistant adds another variation. In some businesses, it can sit close to buyer admin assistant. Elsewhere, it may involve greater product, supplier or defined commercial responsibility.Progression is clearer when responsibility changes, rather than when the title changes.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Buyer Admin Assistant?
We establish what the business needs the person to manage now, what can be developed with support and where approval remains within the buying team.We then look for evidence of the things that matter at this level: maintaining accurate information, following through on actions, communicating clearly and knowing when to ask for support.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

Is a buyer admin assistant the same as a buyer assistant?
Not always. Some fashion and lifestyle businesses use the titles for similar roles. Elsewhere, buyer assistant can include greater product, supplier or commercial responsibility. The remit behind the title is more useful than the title alone.
Do you need previous buying experience to become a buyer admin assistant?
Not for every role. Some employers look for previous buying or placement experience, while others may consider relevant study, retail experience or transferable evidence of accuracy, organisation and follow-through. It depends on what the person needs to contribute from the start.
What is the difference between a buyer admin assistant and an assistant buyer?
A buyer admin assistant typically focuses on the information, administration and coordination around buying activity. An assistant buyer may have greater involvement in ranges, suppliers, analysis and defined commercial decisions. The boundary still varies between businesses.
Hiring a Buyer Admin Assistant?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your buying team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Buyer Admin Assistant Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Buyer Admin Assistant Hiring

Admin Assistant

Recruitment services for assistant buyers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Assistant Buyer Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides assistant buyer recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At assistant buyer level, the role can move beyond keeping buying activity organised into contributing to ranges, analysing performance, working with suppliers and making commercial recommendations. Before recruitment starts, we establish what the assistant buyer will contribute to, what they can recommend or progress and where buyer review or approval remains.Key Takeaways

Assistant buyer can mark the point where support becomes defined buying responsibility. That may include range activity, trade analysis, supplier contact, negotiation or reorders within agreed controls.

The title does not define how far that responsibility extends. One assistant buyer may work within close Buyer guidance; another may already carry responsibility for a product area, KPI or part of a range.

A recommendation needs evidence of assistant buyer capability. Encore Recruitment looks at range activity, analysis, supplier contact, commercial recommendations and where buyer review or approval remained. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Assistant Buyer Responsibility Begin?
Assistant buyer roles can include range development, competitor and trend analysis, supplier communication, trading activity and product development. Some also include negotiation, reorders within agreed controls or responsibility for defined products or categories. What matters is how the person has contributed. One assistant buyer may prepare information for a range review. Another may use trading information to recommend changes, discuss options with suppliers and progress agreed actions. The buying model can also change the work. In own-brand buying, the role may involve more product development, samples and supplier follow-up. In branded buying, the emphasis may sit more heavily on selection, brand relationships and trading performance. We look at what information the person used, what they recommended or progressed and where buyer review or approval remained.
How Far Does an Assistant Buyer’s Commercial Responsibility Extend?
Assistant buyers can contribute to commercial decisions without holding final authority for all of them.Analysing sales and recommending a repeat is different from committing the spend. Negotiating with a supplier is different from agreeing the final commercial position. Contributing to a range is different from approving it.An assistant buyer may work with OTB information or take agreed action within it without controlling the total budget or authorising exceptions. Some assistant buyers also coach buyer admin assistants, trainees or interns. That can show wider responsibility, although people support alone does not establish commercial level. The boundary with junior buyer can be less clear. A junior buyer may carry broader responsibility in one business, while an experienced assistant buyer elsewhere may already manage comparable range, supplier or trading activity.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend an Assistant Buyer?
We establish what the business needs the assistant buyer to contribute to, where buyer review or approval remains and what can develop with greater responsibility. We then look for evidence of assistant buyer responsibility: the ranges or products they have contributed to, the information they have analysed, supplier conversations they have handled and the recommendations they have made.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between an assistant buyer and a buyer assistant?
The titles are not used consistently. In some businesses, buyer assistant can sit close to buyer admin assistant. Elsewhere, it may carry greater product, supplier or commercial responsibility. Assistant buyer more consistently indicates defined buying contribution, although the level of independence still varies.
Does an assistant buyer have their own range?
Sometimes. An assistant buyer may take responsibility for defined products, categories or part of a range while the buyer retains wider strategy or approval. In other teams, the assistant buyer works more closely within a buyer-led structure.
What is the difference between an assistant buyer and a junior buyer?
There is no universal boundary. A junior buyer may carry broader commercial responsibility, while some assistant buyers already manage defined range, supplier or trading activity. Junior Buyer Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides junior buyer recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A junior buyer role can mark a supported move into broader commercial responsibility. That may include tracking sales, margin and stock, contributing to range activity, working with suppliers and recommending trading actions, while some decisions still sit with a senior buyer or wider team. Before recruitment starts, we establish the product area involved, what the junior buyer will own, what they can recommend or progress and where review or approval remains.Key Takeaways

Junior buyer can describe a real step into broader commercial responsibility. The role may include trading analysis, supplier activity, OTB involvement and responsibility for defined products or categories.

The boundary with assistant buyer is not universal. Some junior buyers work within close senior buyer support, while experienced assistant buyers elsewhere may already carry comparable responsibility.

A recommendation needs evidence of junior buyer capability. Encore Recruitment looks at range activity, trading analysis, supplier contact, commercial recommendations and where senior buyer review or approval remained. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Makes a Junior Buyer Role Genuinely Junior Buyer Level?
The title alone does not establish the level. A junior buyer may track sales, margin and stock, recommend trading actions, work with suppliers and contribute to range or category plans. In some businesses, the role may also include OTB responsibility or defined product areas under senior supervision. What matters is the combination of responsibility and support.Someone may make recommendations from trading data while still relying on a senior buyer for approval. Another junior buyer may be expected to progress supplier or product activity with less checking. The brief therefore needs to show what sits with the junior buyer, what still needs review and what outcomes they are expected to influence or deliver.
Where Does Junior Buyer Responsibility Sit Between Assistant Buyer and Buyer?
Junior buyer does not always sit neatly between assistant buyer and buyer. An experienced assistant buyer may already handle range activity, supplier negotiation or defined commercial work. A junior buyer may carry broader responsibility, although some roles still sit within a clear senior buyer framework.OTB is one useful boundary. A junior buyer may manage agreed OTB activity or work within a controlled budget, although that does not automatically establish authority over the total spend or exceptions. The same applies to trading and range decisions. Recommending a repeat or exit is different from having final approval. Contributing to a range is different from owning the full category strategy. The useful comparison is what responsibility has genuinely moved on: the product area, activity delegated, reviews required and outcomes carried.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Junior Buyer?
We establish what product or category responsibility sits with the junior buyer, where senior buyer review or approval remains and what can develop with greater responsibility. We then look for evidence of junior buyer responsibility: the ranges they have worked on, the trading information they have used, supplier conversations they have handled and the recommendations they have made.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between an assistant buyer and a junior buyer?
There is no universal boundary. A junior buyer may carry broader commercial responsibility, while an experienced assistant buyer elsewhere may already manage comparable range, supplier or trading activity. The useful comparison is what has genuinely changed in the remit.
Does a junior buyer manage OTB?
They can. A junior buyer may manage agreed OTB activity or work within a controlled budget, although that does not necessarily mean they control the total spend or can authorise exceptions. The level of financial responsibility varies between businesses.
What is the difference between a junior buyer and a buyer?
A buyer more consistently carries established range and commercial responsibility. Senior Buyer Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior buyer recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A senior buyer title can indicate broader category direction, supplier responsibility, product approval, budget oversight or team development. The exact difference from buyer varies between businesses, particularly where buyer roles already include strategy, OTB responsibility or people leadership. Before recruitment starts, we establish what has become broader, more complex or more accountable at senior buyer level and where decisions still sit elsewhere.Key Takeaways

Senior buyer should mean more than a change of title. Greater category scope, supplier complexity, approval responsibility, budget oversight or team development can all indicate a more senior remit.

Buyer and senior buyer responsibilities can overlap. Some buyer roles already include strategy, supplier leadership, OTB and people development, so the difference needs to be established from the work rather than assumed.

A recommendation needs evidence of senior buyer capability. Encore Recruitment looks at category scope, supplier decisions, approvals, commercial responsibility and team contribution. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Should Be Different at Senior Buyer Level?
Senior buyer responsibility can extend beyond managing a range or delivering commercial performance. That may mean setting wider category direction, handling more complex supplier relationships, approving product or promotional activity, overseeing budgets or supporting the development of buyers and assistants. The important question is not whether someone has done each of those things. It is what has genuinely become broader or more accountable compared with the buyer role below it.One senior buyer may carry responsibility across a larger or more complex category. Another may act as an escalation point for supplier, product or trading issues. Elsewhere, the distinction may sit more heavily in approvals, budget oversight or development of the buying team. That difference needs to be visible in the brief.
Where Does Senior Buyer Authority Begin and End?
The senior buyer title does not automatically establish unrestricted commercial authority.A senior buyer may approve product, promotional activity or range decisions within their remit, while wider budget, contract or business-level approvals sit elsewhere. Supplier responsibility may become broader without necessarily giving the person final authority over every commercial term. The same applies to people leadership. A senior buyer may coach or develop buyers and sssistants, while formal management responsibility varies between structures. This is why comparing senior buyer with buyer requires more than looking at reporting lines or team size.We need to know which decisions the person owns, which decisions they influence, what still needs checking and when something moves beyond the senior buyer’s remit.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Senior Buyer?
We establish what has become broader or more accountable in the role: category scope, supplier responsibility, approvals, commercial responsibility, team contribution and where escalation sits.We then look for evidence of senior buyer responsibility: the categories they have led, supplier issues they have handled, approvals they have carried, commercial activity they have overseen and where others have relied on their input.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a buyer and a senior buyer?
There is no universal boundary. Senior buyer can involve broader category direction, more complex supplier responsibility, additional approvals, budget oversight or team development. Some buyer roles already include several of those responsibilities, so the actual remit needs to be compared.
Does a senior buyer manage people?
They can. Senior buyers may coach or develop buyers and assistants, although formal line management is not universal. People responsibility should be established separately from commercial seniority.
Does a senior buyer have final approval?
Sometimes within a defined remit. A senior buyer may hold product or promotional approval, while wider range, budget, contract or business-level decisions sit elsewhere.
Hiring a Senior Buyer?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what has become broader, more complex or more accountable in the role.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Buyer Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Recruitment services for buying managers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Buying Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides buying manager recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At buying manager level, responsibility can extend beyond a single category into the performance of a wider buying area, the development of the team and delivery against commercial plans. The span varies between businesses, as does what still sits with wider leadership. Before recruitment starts, we establish the area the muying manager will lead, the commercial outcomes they are accountable for, the team responsibility involved and where higher-level approval remains.Key Takeaways

Buying manager responsibility extends beyond individual range delivery. The role can include area sales, margin and contribution plans, OTB partnership, team capability and coordination across several categories or brands.

The title does not define the size of the remit. One buying manager may report to a head of buying, while another reports directly into wider leadership. Team size, category breadth and commercial authority need to be established separately.

A recommendation needs evidence of buying manager capability. Encore Recruitment looks at area performance, commercial plans, team leadership, cross-functional decisions and where senior approval remained. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Changes When Buyer Responsibility Becomes Buying Management?
A buying manager can be responsible for the performance of a wider buying area rather than only their own range or category. That may include leading annual or seasonal commercial plans, reviewing sales and margin performance, working with merchandising on OTB, challenging category performance and coordinating priorities across the buying team. The role may also include responsibility for supplier or brand portfolios, contracts or wider commercial relationships, depending on the business. What matters is the shift from delivering within one remit to governing how several buying activities come together. A buying manager may still be close to product and trading decisions while carrying a wider view of area performance and the people responsible for delivering it.
How Much Authority Sits With a Buying Manager?
Buying manager authority varies with the structure above and around the role.A Buying manager may carry responsibility for area sales, margin and contribution, with OTB managed alongside merchandising. Some roles also include budget or concession contract responsibility. That does not mean every buying manager holds the same financial or contractual authority. The same applies to team leadership. Managing buyers, senior buyers or assistants can form part of the role, although the size and shape of the team differs between businesses.Reporting lines also vary. A buying manager may report to a head of buying in one structure and directly into wider leadership in another. For the brief, we need to know which commercial decisions sit with the buying manager, which require wider approval and where responsibility changes again above the role.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Buying Manager?
We establish the buying area involved, the commercial outcomes expected, the team and category span, the relationship with merchandising and where approval sits above the role.We then look for evidence of buying manager responsibility: the areas they have led, the plans they have delivered, budgets or OTB they have worked with, people they have developed and decisions they have been accountable for.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a senior buyer and a buying manager?
A senior buyer may lead a broad or complex category, while a buying manager more consistently carries responsibility across a wider buying area, team or commercial plan. The exact boundary still depends on structure, category breadth and delegated authority.
Does a buying manager own the OTB?
Sometimes in partnership with merchandising. A buying manager may work with OTB and wider commercial plans, while forecasting, agreed limits and exceptions remain shared or sit elsewhere.
What is the difference between a buying manager and a head of buying?
A buying manager typically leads an area or group within the buying function. A head of buying may carry wider responsibility for the function or division. The boundary still depends on the structure and authority delegated to each role.
Hiring a Buying Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about the area, team and commercial responsibility the role needs to carry.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Buying Manager Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Head of Buying Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides head of buying recruitment as part of our wider buyer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Head of buying is a senior leadership role, though the scope can vary materially between businesses. One role may lead the whole buying function; another may lead a major division, several categories or a group of buying managers. The title suggests the level. The conversation defines the role. The role shapes the search.Key Takeaways

Head of buying describes leadership, not one fixed remit. The role may cover the whole function, a division, several categories or a combination of commercial and people responsibilities.

Reporting line does not define authority. A head of buying may report to a commercial director or another senior leader, while the level of delegated authority can still vary considerably.

A recommendation needs evidence of head of buying capability. Encore Recruitment looks at buying strategy, commercial scope, team leadership, decision-making and what still sat above or alongside the role. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Is the Head of Buying Leading?
A head of buying may lead the entire buying function, a large division or several categories and channels. The team can also vary, from direct leadership of buyers and senior buyers to a structure that includes buying managers. The commercial remit can include buying strategy, category direction, margin performance, supplier and sourcing priorities and team development.A role leading one division may carry substantial commercial accountability without owning the whole buying function. Another may sit at the top of buying across the business and work directly with commercial, merchandising, finance or senior leadership. The brief therefore needs to establish what the person is leading, not rely on the title alone.
Where Does Head of Buying Responsibility Begin and End?
The title does not automatically reveal final authority over budgets, OTB, contracts or every commercial decision.A head of buying may direct buying priorities, challenge performance and shape sourcing or supplier strategy while financial planning remains shared with merchandising or finance. Contract approval or wider corporate sign-off may sit elsewhere.Reporting structures vary too. Some heads of buying report to a commercial director or another senior leader. Others sit within a broader buying and merchandising or trading structure.People leadership also varies. The role may include capability, succession and team structure, although the number of managers or buyers underneath them will differ. For the search, we need to know the span, the decisions held, what is shared and where escalation moves next.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Head of Buying?
We establish the function or division involved, the commercial outcomes expected, the team structure, reporting line and where approval sits above or alongside the role.We then look for evidence of head of buying responsibility: the strategy they have led, the categories or divisions they have been accountable for, the teams they have developed and the decisions they have carried.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a buying manager and a head of buying?
A buying manager more consistently leads a buying area or group, while a head of buying may lead a wider function or division. The exact boundary depends on category span, team structure, commercial responsibility and the leadership structure around the role.
Does a head of buying own the OTB?
Not automatically. A head of buying may have significant input into OTB and commercial planning, while forecasting, limits and final approval can remain shared with merchandising, finance or another senior leader.
Who does a head of buying report to?
It varies. A head of buying may report to a commercial director, managing director or another senior leader. Some businesses include another buying leadership layer, while others place head of buying at the top of the function.
Hiring a Head of Buying?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the role is actually leading, the authority it carries and where it sits within your wider commercial structure.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Head of Buying Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Head of Buying Hiring

Recruitment services for buyers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Buyer Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire buyers across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers. The title alone does not tell you what the person owns, influences or decides. One buyer may lead a category, range and supplier relationships. Another may work within a wider structure where OTB, final approvals or parts of the commercial plan sit elsewhere. Before the search begins, we establish what this person needs to take responsibility for, which commercial decisions sit with them and what should be shared, reviewed or escalated.Key Takeaways

An established buyer carries defined range and commercial responsibility. That can include category direction, product selection or development, supplier relationships, negotiation, OTB, trading activity and commercial performance.

Buying responsibility changes by level. Buyer admin assistant/buying assistant, assistant buyer, junior buyer, buyer, senior buyer, buying manager and head of buying roles differ through ownership, independence, authority and wider accountability.

A recommendation needs evidence behind the buyer title. We look at the ranges, suppliers, commercial decisions and outcomes the candidate has been responsible for. If our assessment supports it, and they want Encore Recruitment to represent them, we recommend them to the client.

What Does a Buyer Take Responsibility For?
A buyer takes responsibility for the product or brand offer and the commercial buying decisions within their remit. That can include using customer and trading information to shape a range, selecting or developing products, working with suppliers or brands, negotiating costs and terms, working with OTB and responding to commercial performance. The activity alone does not define the level.Working with OTB is different from controlling the total budget. Negotiating with a supplier is different from having final authority to accept every commercial term. Presenting a range is different from holding final approval for all product, financial or technical decisions.Own-brand and branded buying also place different demands on the role.In own-brand buying, the buyer may work through design, samples, product development, suppliers and technical. In branded buying, greater emphasis may sit on brand selection, buying appointments, commercial terms, exclusives, returns and trading performance.Buyers also work closely with merchandising. Buying may lead range and supplier decisions while merchandising carries greater responsibility for forecasting, WSSI, stock planning or financial analysis. The recruitment question is not simply whether someone has worked as a buyer. It is what they owned, what they recommended or decided, what somebody else approved and where final commercial responsibility sat.
How Does the Role Change at Different Levels?
As buyer roles progress, responsibility tends to move from supporting buying activity towards independent range ownership, wider commercial authority and leadership of the buying function.

At buyer admin assistant/buying assistant level, the person may maintain product and order information, organise samples, follow up with suppliers and support buying activity.

An assistant buyer can move further into range activity, trading analysis, supplier contact, negotiation and defined commercial recommendations.

A junior buyer can mark a supported move into broader commercial responsibility, although the boundary with an experienced Assistant Buyer is not universal.

At established buyer level, range ownership and commercial delivery become more central.

A senior buyer may add wider category direction, supplier complexity, approvals, budget oversight, escalation and development of other Buyers.

A buying manager moves further into responsibility for a wider buying area, commercial plans, several categories or brands and the people delivering them.

A head of buying may lead the whole buying function or a major division, with wider responsibility for strategy, commercial performance, sourcing priorities and team capability.

For more detail, read our dedicated pages for:

Buyer Admin Assistant/Buying Assistant

Assistant Buyer

Junior Buyer

Senior Buyer

Buying Manager

Head of Buying

H2: Buyer Salaries
Buyer salaries reflect more than the job title. Product category, commercial responsibility, buying model, location, team structure and the level of authority carried can all affect salary. Indicative salary ranges include:

Buyer Admin Assistant/Buying Assistant: £25,000–£29,000

Assistant Buyer: £30,000–£32,000

Junior Buyer: £32,000–£37,000

Buyer: £40,000–£50,000

Senior Buyer: £75,000+

Buying Manager: £80,000+

Head of Buying: salary varies according to the scope and structure of the role

Salary ranges updated August 2026.These ranges are indicative and should be considered alongside the responsibility and scope of the role. Any salary offered must also reflect contracted hours and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation is based on evidence of the responsibility the role requires, not the candidate’s job title alone. We start by establishing what the client needs the Buyer to take responsibility for, including the product or brand area, buying model, range responsibility, suppliers, commercial outcomes, OTB involvement and approval routes. We then speak with the candidate about the buying responsibility they have carried, what they want from their next role and how the opportunity compares. That conversation gives us more context around the ranges they have worked with, supplier or brand relationships they have handled, commercial information they have used, negotiations or recommendations they have made and which decisions were theirs to take. For a move between product categories or buying models, we compare the customer, price structure, product process, supplier environment and responsibility already carried rather than relying on a matching title. We give the candidate the role to review and they decide whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them.If they do, and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard. That recommendation is Encore Recruitment’s assessment. The hiring decision remains with the client and candidate.Explore how the Recommendation Standard sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What does a buyer do?
A buyer helps shape the products or brands a business offers and the commercial decisions behind them. Responsibilities can include range direction, supplier relationships, negotiation, OTB, pricing and trading activity.
What is the difference between a buyer and a retail merchandiser?
A buyer focuses more on the product or brand offer, range decisions, supplier relationships and commercial buying activity. A retail merchandiser focuses more heavily on forecasting, stock, WSSI, OTB planning and trading performance.
Can buyers move between product categories?
Yes. The useful comparison is the customer, price structure, product or development model, supplier environment and the decisions the person has already carried. Trainee & Graduate Designer Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides Trainee and Graduate recruitment as part of our wider designer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Trainee and graduate roles can involve similar work, although qualifications, starting responsibilities and development expectations vary. Before recruitment starts, we establish what someone needs to contribute, what can develop with guidance and where design review or approval remains.Key Takeaways

Starting capability matters alongside potential. Relevant study, portfolio projects, placements or practical work may demonstrate what someone can contribute. Requirements depend on the products and the role.

Creative contribution does not establish independent authority. Trainee and graduate designers may support research, drawings, design development and samples while experienced colleagues retain wider decisions.

A recommendation needs evidence and candidate agreement. Encore Recruitment assesses personal contribution, response to feedback and development potential. Candidates consider the opportunity and agree to representation before we recommend them to a client.

What Do Trainee and Graduate Designers Need to Contribute From the Start?
Previous commercial design experience is not always required. Some employers expect a relevant qualification, placement or design software capability. Others consider portfolio projects and practical evidence of creative development.Graduate generally refers to an educational background, while trainee places greater emphasis on learning within the role. Neither title establishes someone's independent design capability. The product area matters. Garment design may require knowledge of silhouette, fabric and construction. Apparel graphics can involve artwork, colour and placement. Knitwear may involve yarns, stitches and garment development.Evidence may come from university projects, placements, personal work or employment. We look at what someone created, the brief they followed, the choices they made and how they responded to feedback.
What Do Trainee and Graduate Designers Support, and What Can They Decide?
Trainee and graduate designers may support research, mood boards, CAD drawings, design information, sample organisation and amendments. Their responsibilities depend on the products, team structure and guidance available.Preparing research is different from setting creative direction. Producing drawings is different from deciding which styles progress. Amending designs following sample reviews does not necessarily mean approving the finished product.Someone may complete defined tasks independently while wider creative, commercial or technical decisions remain with experienced colleagues. The boundary with design assistant also varies. Some assistant roles centre on studio support and documentation; others include direct design contribution.Progression becomes clearer through increased responsibility, independence and the ability to explain decisions or recognise when guidance is needed.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Trainee or Graduate Designer?
We establish the contribution needed from the start, what the business can develop through guidance and where review or approval remains. We then assess relevant portfolio evidence, design communication, personal contribution and response to feedback. Potential matters alongside experience. We also consider the candidate's expectations and the support available in the role.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role.Read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a trainee designer and a graduate designer?
Graduate designer generally describes someone entering design after relevant study. Trainee designer emphasises learning with guidance and may allow different entry routes. Responsibilities can overlap, so the actual work and support matter more than the title.
What should a trainee or graduate designer portfolio demonstrate?
Research, ideas, drawings and development from a brief can provide evidence. The person should be able to explain their contribution, the choices made and how feedback changed the work. Finished images alone may not establish individual capability.
How does this role differ from a design assistant?
Trainee and graduate roles may emphasise developing capability through guided work. Design assistants may have established studio, documentation or design responsibilities. The useful distinction is what someone contributes independently and where review remains.
Hiring a Trainee or Graduate Designer?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your design team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Trainee or Graduate Designer Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Encore Recruitment provides junior and assistant designer recruitment as part of our wider designer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Junior and assistant designers contribute to product creation and development. Their responsibilities can overlap, from supporting senior colleagues to independently progressing defined design work. Before recruitment starts, we establish what someone needs to create, how far they can progress the work and where design review or approval remains.Key Takeaways

The title does not establish the level. Junior and assistant designers may undertake similar work, although the extent of product responsibility and independence varies between businesses.

Design contribution extends beyond preparing drawings. Research, CADs, technical packs, supplier communication and sample development may form part of either role. Creating or progressing work does not necessarily mean approving it.

A recommendation needs evidence of personal contribution. Encore Recruitment assesses what someone has designed, how their work developed and which decisions required approval. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to representation before we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Junior or Assistant Designer Responsibility Begin?
Junior and assistant designers may research trends, interpret briefs, create original designs, prepare CAD drawings and contribute to product development. An assistant designer may already develop styles and technical packs, while a junior designer elsewhere may work more closely under senior guidance. The product category changes the work. Garment design can require knowledge of shape, fabric and construction. Knitwear, graphics and print involve different materials, techniques and design outputs.Business context also matters. A retailer or brand may focus on an established customer and product direction. A supplier may need designers to respond to briefs, feedback and development requirements from several customers. We look at what someone personally created, how they responded to the brief and what responsibility they carried through development.
How Far Does Their Creative and Product Responsibility Extend?
Junior and assistant designers can contribute directly to products without holding final creative or technical authority.Developing an original style is different from approving its place in a range. Preparing a technical pack does not necessarily mean approving measurements, grading or construction. Discussing amendments with a supplier is different from authorising a change that affects cost or delivery. Some designers may independently progress defined styles, present options or recommend amendments. Others may work within closer review arrangements.Responsibility can also include helping colleagues, managing deadlines or coordinating design information. These activities matter, although they do not automatically establish a more senior creative role. The boundary between junior, assistant and designer becomes clearer through the complexity of the work, the decisions someone can make and the review that remains.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Junior or Assistant Designer?
We establish the products involved, the contribution required, the independence expected and where creative, commercial or technical approval remains. We then assess relevant design evidence: briefs, portfolio projects, original work, technical information, development changes and the candidate's contribution to completed products.A portfolio demonstrates the work. Our conversations help establish what the person created, influenced or progressed, and which decisions belonged to colleagues.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a junior designer and an assistant designer?
There is no universal distinction. An assistant designer may create original styles and progress development work, while a junior designer elsewhere may have more limited responsibility. The useful comparison is what each person creates, progresses and decides independently.
Do junior and assistant designers need experience in a specific product category?
That depends on the role. Relevant garment, knitwear, print or graphic design experience may be important where the work requires particular product knowledge. Employers may also consider transferable design capability where appropriate guidance is available.
Can a junior or assistant designer be responsible for their own products?
Yes, within agreed boundaries. They may develop designs, manage defined tasks and recommend changes while senior colleagues retain range selection, technical approval or wider commercial decisions. The level of responsibility depends on the business.
Hiring a Junior or Assistant Designer?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your design team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Junior or Assistant Designer Role?
Start a conversation about where you'd like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Designer Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior designer recruitment as part of our wider designer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Senior designers may lead product categories, shape design direction and manage complex development work. The title does not establish how far their creative authority or leadership responsibilities extend. Before recruitment starts, we establish what the senior designer needs to lead, which decisions they can make and where wider approval remains.Key Takeaways

Senior responsibility extends beyond producing designs. A Senior designer may guide category direction, resolve complex development challenges and influence product decisions across teams.

Creative leadership and people management are different responsibilities. Senior designers may mentor colleagues, review design work or direct category activity without holding formal line-management authority.

A recommendation requires evidence of senior-level contribution. Encore Recruitment assesses category responsibility, design decisions, development challenges and influence. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to representation before we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Senior Designer Responsibility Begin?
Senior designers may lead the design and development of defined product categories, contributing to seasonal direction, materials, colour, range development and product reviews. Their remit depends on the products and business model. In a brand or retailer, responsibility may centre on developing a coherent collection for an established customer. In a supplier, it may involve interpreting different customer briefs, presenting design proposals and responding to external feedback.Product knowledge also matters. Leading knitwear development requires different evidence from directing apparel graphics, woven garments or footwear design.A senior designer may establish design direction for a category while broader creative strategy remains with a head of design or director. We look at the complexity of the work, the direction someone has shaped and the decisions they have been responsible for making.
How Far Does a Senior Designer's Authority Extend?
Senior designers can carry substantial creative responsibility without holding final authority over every product decision.Leading category design is different from approving the complete range. Selecting or recommending materials does not necessarily mean approving technical suitability or cost. Guiding sample development is different from authorising production release. Some senior designers review colleagues' work, mentor junior team members or coordinate design priorities. Others remain predominantly hands-on, concentrating on complex products and category development.Formal people management, resource allocation and performance responsibility may sit with a design manager or head of design. The distinction matters when someone is moving into a senior role or considering a management position. Greater creative influence does not automatically mean responsibility for managing a team.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Senior Designer?
We establish the category or product responsibility required, the creative decisions involved and the relationship with buying, product development, technical and design leadership. We then assess relevant evidence: collections developed, design direction influenced, complex problems resolved and decisions made during product development. We also explore how the candidate has worked with others, whether they have guided colleagues and what responsibility they want from their next role.A portfolio can demonstrate creative output. Our conversations establish the person's contribution, the decisions they made and where approval remained elsewhere.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The distinction depends on the decisions made, product scope and independence required rather than the title or years of experience alone.
Does a senior designer manage a team?
Not necessarily. Some senior designers mentor colleagues, review work or guide category activity without formal line-management responsibility. Others manage people alongside their design work. The reporting structure and management expectations need to be established for each role.
What is the difference between a senior designer and a design manager?
Senior designers may concentrate on creative direction and product development within a category. Design managers may take greater responsibility for team priorities, workflow, resources and performance. The balance of hands-on design and management varies between businesses.
Hiring a Senior Designer?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your design team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Designer Role?
Start a conversation about where you'd like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Design Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides design manager recruitment as part of our wider designer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Design managers may lead design teams, coordinate product development and take responsibility for creative delivery. The balance between hands-on design, people management and creative direction varies between businesses. Before recruitment starts, we establish what the design manager needs to manage, which decisions they can make and where wider creative or commercial approval remains.Key Takeaways

Managing design involves more than creative capability. A design manager may allocate work, manage team capacity, review progress and develop colleagues alongside contributing to product design.

Management responsibility does not establish final creative authority. A design manager may guide product development and approve work within agreed limits while a head of design or director retains wider creative direction.

A recommendation requires evidence of management responsibility. Encore Recruitment assesses team leadership, workflow decisions, product delivery and creative contribution. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to representation before we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Design Manager Responsibility Begin?
Design managers may coordinate design priorities, allocate work, review output and support the development of team members. Some remain closely involved in designing products, developing ranges and presenting creative proposals. Others concentrate on managing the people and processes that support design delivery. The business model changes the work. A retailer or brand may have one established product direction across several categories. A supplier may need to coordinate design work for different customers, briefs and presentation deadlines.Team structure also matters. A design manager may manage several designers and assistants, lead a small product team or share responsibilities with senior creative colleagues. We look at what someone has managed, the decisions they have made and the outcomes they were accountable for.
How Far Does a Design Manager's Authority Extend?
Managing a design team does not necessarily mean controlling every creative or product decision. Allocating work is different from setting the seasonal design direction. Reviewing designs is different from giving final range approval.Managing development deadlines does not automatically mean authorising cost changes or production release.A design manager may decide how work is distributed, address capacity problems, review performance and support colleagues' development. Wider creative or commercial decisions may remain with a head of design, director or buying team. The distinction from senior designer can be significant. A senior designer may lead complex category work and mentor colleagues without managing performance or team resources.Equally, some design managers retain substantial responsibility for personally developing products. The useful comparison is how far accountability extends across people, creative work, decisions and delivery.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Design Manager?
We establish the team structure, management responsibilities, product categories and balance between creative work and functional delivery. We then assess evidence of allocating work, managing priorities, developing colleagues, reviewing design output and resolving delivery challenges. We also explore the candidate's creative contribution, the decisions they have made independently and where approval remained with senior leadership.A portfolio may demonstrate design capability. Managing a function requires additional evidence of how someone has supported people, handled competing priorities and delivered work through a team.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a senior designer and a design manager?
A senior designer may lead category design and complex product development. A design manager may have wider responsibility for team priorities, resources, workflow and performance. Some responsibilities overlap, so the distinction depends on what the person manages and the decisions they make.
Does a design manager still design products?
Sometimes. In smaller teams, a design manager may retain substantial hands-on design responsibility. Elsewhere, the role may concentrate on reviewing work, managing people and coordinating delivery. The balance depends on the business and team structure.
What is the difference between a design manager and a head of design?
A design manager may focus on team delivery, people and workflow within an established creative direction. A head of design may carry wider responsibility for creative direction, collections and the design function. The titles can overlap, and final approval may sit with a director.
Hiring a Design Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your design team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Design Manager Role?
Start a conversation about where you'd like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Design Manager Hiring

Recruitment services for heads of design and fashion businesses across the UK.

Head of Design Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides head of design recruitment as part of our wider designer recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.A head of design may lead creative direction, oversee collections and carry responsibility for the design team. The extent of that authority depends on the business, its products and wider leadership structure. Before recruitment starts, we establish what the head of design needs to lead, which decisions they can make and where creative, commercial or technical approval is shared.Key Takeaways

Creative direction and functional leadership can sit together. A head of design may shape seasonal direction, oversee product categories and lead the people responsible for design delivery.

Leading design does not establish unrestricted authority. Final range decisions, investment, technical approval and wider brand direction may remain shared with buying, product or creative leadership.

A recommendation requires evidence of functional responsibility. Encore Recruitment assesses creative direction, collection development, team leadership and decision authority. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to representation before we recommend them to the client.

What Does a Head of Design Lead?
A head of design leads creative direction, collection development and the design team within an agreed scope.Responsibilities may include seasonal concepts, product categories, design reviews and developing colleagues. The business structure determines which decisions sit with the head of design and which require wider approval. The business model changes the remit. In a retailer or brand, the role may focus on maintaining a coherent creative direction across collections. In a supplier, the challenge may involve leading teams responding to different customer briefs and product requirements.Product scope also matters. Leading clothing design across several categories requires different experience from overseeing knitwear, apparel graphics, footwear or accessories.A head of design may influence wider product strategy while working within brand direction established by a creative or product director. We look at what someone has led, the creative direction they have established and the outcomes for which they were accountable.
How Far Does a Head of Design's Authority Extend?
Leading a design function does not necessarily mean holding final approval over every decision. Establishing seasonal design direction is different from approving the complete commercial range.Selecting materials or design details does not automatically mean approving technical suitability, cost or production release. Leading a design team is different from controlling the wider brand identity. Some heads of design retain substantial hands-on creative involvement. Others concentrate on team leadership, collection reviews, design standards and longer-term direction. The boundary with design manager can vary. Both roles may involve people management and product development, while the head of design may carry wider responsibility across categories or the design function.Creative director can introduce another distinction. Some creative leadership roles extend beyond product design into brand image, campaigns and visual identity. What matters is the scope of responsibility, the decisions held and where approval remains with other leaders.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Head of Design?
We establish the design function's scope, the categories involved, reporting relationships and the balance between creative direction, leadership and delivery. We then assess evidence of collections led, creative decisions made, teams developed and complex product or commercial challenges addressed. We also explore how the candidate has worked with buying, product development, technical and senior leadership, including where decisions required agreement.A portfolio may demonstrate creative direction and product outcomes. Our conversations establish the person's contribution, leadership responsibility and authority behind those results.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What is the difference between a design manager and a head of design?
A design manager may concentrate on team priorities, workflow and design delivery. A head of design may have wider responsibility for creative direction, collections and the design function. Responsibilities overlap, so the distinction depends on authority, scope and reporting structure.
Does a head of design have final approval over collections?
Not necessarily. A head of design may establish direction, review products and approve defined creative decisions. Final range selection, investment or product sign-off may be shared with buying, product or senior leadership.
What is the difference between a head of design and a creative director?
A head of design may lead product design, collections and the design team. Head of Design Hiring

Recruitment services for designers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Designer Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire designers across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers. The title alone does not tell you what the person creates, develops or decides. One Designer may independently lead a product category and progress designs through development. Another may work within a wider structure where creative direction, range selection or final approvals sit elsewhere. Before the search begins, we establish what this person needs to design, which decisions sit with them and where responsibility is shared, reviewed or escalated.Key Takeaways

An established designer carries defined creative and product responsibility. That can include research, concepts, CAD drawings, materials, colour, artwork, range development, samples and supplier collaboration, depending on the product and business.

Design responsibility changes by level. Graduate and trainee, junior and assistant, designer, senior designer, design manager and head of design roles differ through independence, product responsibility, creative authority and leadership.

A recommendation needs evidence behind the designer title. We look at what the candidate created, developed, influenced and decided, what they want next and how the opportunity compares. If our assessment supports it, and they agree to representation, we recommend them to the client.

What Does a Designer Take Responsibility For?
A designer translates customer, brand or supplier briefs into product concepts and designs, then contributes to developing those designs towards finished products. Responsibilities may include research, sketches, CAD drawings, colour and material selection, artwork, specifications and sample reviews. The activity alone does not define the level.Creating the design, developing the product and approving the outcome are different responsibilities.Creating a design is different from deciding which styles progress. Reviewing a sample is different from approving technical suitability. Preparing development information does not necessarily mean holding final authority over cost or production release. The product determines what a designer needs to know and produce.A garment designer may develop silhouettes, select fabrics and refine construction details through samples. A knitwear designer may work with yarns, stitches, gauges and knitted garment development. An apparel graphic designer may create artwork, colourways and placement designs for application to garments. These disciplines require different evidence of design capability. Experience in one does not automatically establish capability in another.Own-brand design may involve maintaining an established creative direction. A supplier may work across different customer briefs, development requirements and approval processes.Designers also work with buying, merchandising, product development, garment technology and suppliers. Responsibility for creative, commercial and technical decisions may sit across these functions. The recruitment question is not simply whether someone has worked as a designer. It is what they created, progressed and decided, what others approved and where their responsibility ended.
How Does the Role Change at Different Levels?
Design responsibility changes through creative contribution, independence, product complexity, decision authority and wider leadership.Titles overlap, and career development does not follow one fixed sequence.

At trainee and graduate designer level, the person may contribute through research, drawings, development work and samples while building capability with guidance. A graduate qualification does not establish independent design responsibility.

Junior and assistant designers may create original designs, prepare technical information and progress defined product work. The distinction between these titles varies, particularly around independence and review.

At established designer level, the person may independently develop defined products or categories, present design proposals and progress amendments through sampling. Range selection and approval authority depend on the business and the responsibility assigned.

A senior designer may lead category direction, resolve more complex development challenges and review colleagues' work. That can involve mentoring or managing people, although neither is established by the title alone.

A design manager may add responsibility for team priorities, capacity, workflow, performance and development. Some remain closely involved in hands-on design.

A head of design may lead wider creative direction, collections and the design function. Final creative, commercial and technical approvals can remain shared with other leaders.

Creative director may involve wider brand expression as well as product direction. It is not an automatic progression from head of design.

These distinctions clarify the vacancy. For more detail, read our dedicated pages for:

Trainee and Graduate Designers

Junior and Assistant Designers

Senior Designers

Design Managers

Heads of Design

Designer Salaries
Designer salaries reflect more than the job title. Product category, creative responsibility, technical knowledge, location, business structure and the extent of leadership can all affect salary. Typical salary ranges include:

Trainee/Graduate Designer: £25,000–£26,000

Junior/Assistant Designer: £26,000–£32,000

Designer: £32,000–£40,000

Senior Designer: £40,000–£60,000

Design Manager: £60,000–£80,000

Head of Design: £80,000-£100,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026.Salary ranges are indicative. Any salary offered must reflect contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation starts with establishing what the client needs the designer to create, develop and take responsibility for. That includes product category, customer, business model, creative direction, design development, approval routes, team structure and the relationship with other product functions. We then speak with the candidate about the design responsibility they have carried, what they want from their next role and how the opportunity compares. We examine the brief behind the portfolio, which concepts or drawings the candidate personally created, how designs changed through sampling, what they recommended when cost or technical requirements conflicted, and who made the final decision. For a move between product categories or business models, we compare creative capability, product knowledge, development processes, customer requirements and the responsibility already carried. We give the candidate the opportunity to review, and they decide whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. If they do, and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard. That recommendation is Encore Recruitment's assessment. The hiring decision remains with the client and candidate.Explore how the Recommendation Standard sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What does a designer do?
A designer develops concepts and products for defined customers, categories or briefs. Responsibilities may include research, drawings, colour, materials, print, range development, samples and supplier collaboration. The exact remit depends on the product, business and decisions assigned to the role.
What is the difference between a designer and a product developer?
Designers generally concentrate on creative direction, product concepts and design development. Product developers may take greater responsibility for specifications, sampling, costing and progressing products towards production. Both can contribute throughout development, and responsibilities vary between businesses.
Can designers move between product categories?
Yes. Recruitment services for trainee garment technologists and fashion businesses across the UK.

Trainee Garment Technologist Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides trainee garment technologist recruitment as part of our wider garment technologist recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At trainee level, previous experience only tells part of the story. The person may contribute to the technical process from the start while still developing the judgement needed to take on more responsibility. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to understand why the role is needed, what someone needs to know from the start, what can be learned with support and how their responsibility could develop. We use that understanding to explain the opportunity to candidates, then find, assess and recommend people with the knowledge and potential the role calls for.Key Takeaways

What matters from the start varies by role. A trainee garment technologist may need technical knowledge or practical exposure already, while other parts of the role can be learned with support.

Contribution can begin before independent technical judgement. A trainee could support samples, technical information and critical-path activity while their responsibility develops.

A recommendation follows understanding on both sides. Encore Recruitment needs to see potential for the person to contribute and develop, and the candidate needs to understand the opportunity and want to take that technical step. Only then do we recommend the candidate to the client.

What Should a Trainee Garment Technologist Know From Day One?
A trainee garment technologist may need relevant technical knowledge or practical exposure before joining, while other parts of the role can be learned with support. The starting point depends on the responsibilities of the role and the team around it.Relevant fashion, textiles or garment technology study may matter. Some roles may also need an understanding of garment construction, product information, samples or critical-path activity.Placements, study projects and previous technical exposure can provide useful evidence too. Studying something, observing it and having responsibility for it are different. At trainee level, the question is what someone already knows and can do, alongside what they have the potential to develop.
What Will They Support, and How Will Their Responsibility Develop?
A trainee garment technologist could support samples, technical information and critical-path activity while developing the judgement needed to take on more responsibility. That could mean keeping information up to date, helping samples move through the process, supporting checks or working alongside more experienced members of the technical team. The exact contribution varies between businesses. The support around the role matters too. Which work will be checked? Which decisions stay with someone more experienced? What could the trainee begin handling themselves? Those distinctions help define what the person can contribute from the start and how their responsibility could develop. They also give Encore Recruitment a clearer basis for assessing knowledge and potential rather than relying on the job title or length of previous experience.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend a Trainee Garment Technologist?
Under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard, we only recommend when we understand enough on both sides to see why the opportunity could work. For a trainee garment technologist, that means knowing what the person could contribute from the start, where we see potential for them to develop, and whether the support and responsibility in the role give them the technical step they are looking for.Encore Recruitment discusses the opportunity with the candidate first. If they want to proceed and we see enough potential for the role, we recommend them to the client.See how this sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What qualifications should I look for when hiring a trainee garment technologist?
There is no single qualification for every trainee role. Relevant fashion, textiles or garment technology study may be useful, alongside placements or practical exposure. The requirement should reflect what someone needs to know before joining and what can be learned with support.
How much experience should a trainee garment technologist already have?
That depends on the starting responsibilities. Some roles may suit someone entering the industry, while others may need previous placement or technical experience. The distinction is between what needs to be known already and what can be developed after joining.
What is the difference between a trainee and assistant garment technologist?
There is no consistent industry-wide boundary. A trainee role may focus more on contributing while technical judgement develops with support. An assistant garment technologist role may carry greater responsibility for defined product work or decisions, depending on what they handle, what is checked and where ownership begins.
Hiring a Trainee Garment Technologist?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your technical team and what you need the person to contribute.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Trainee Garment Technologist Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Assistant Garment Technologist Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides assistant garment technologist recruitment as part of our wider garment technologist recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At Assistant level, the title does not tell you how much responsibility the person will have. One role may centre on preparing fittings, measuring samples and keeping technical information accurate. Another may include responsibility for product classes, fittings, testing, supplier communication and technical decisions. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to establish where support ends and ownership begins. We use that understanding to explain the opportunity, assess candidates against the responsibility involved and decide who we are prepared to recommend.Key Takeaways

Assistant does not automatically mean closely supervised. Responsibilities can range from supporting another garment technologist to owning defined product work and making technical decisions within an agreed scope.

The decision boundary matters as much as the task list. Establish what the person will handle themselves, what will be checked and which decisions still sit with a garment technologist or technical manager.

An Encore Recruitment recommendation means the role and candidate have been understood in relation to each other. At Assistant level, that includes the responsibility on offer, what the person has already handled, where support still sits and whether the candidate wants the opportunity before we recommend them to the client.

Where Does Support End and Ownership Begin for an Assistant Garment Technologist?
Ownership begins where the assistant garment technologist is expected to take responsibility for defined product work or technical decisions. Support remains where another technologist directs, checks, approves or takes responsibility for the decision. In a support-led role, they could prepare fittings, measure samples, record comments, update technical information, arrange trials and keep samples moving through development. They may work closely with a garment technologist or technical manager while developing their judgement.Other assistant roles carry considerably more ownership. The person could conduct fittings, take responsibility for defined product classes, work directly with suppliers, review testing information or make technical decisions within their area. That difference changes who Encore Recruitment should look for. The question is not simply whether someone has previously held an assistant title. It is what responsibility sat behind that title.
What Needs to Be Understood Before Recruiting an Assistant Garment Technologist?
Before recruiting an assistant garment technologist, Encore Recruitment needs to establish the role's product scope, technical responsibility, working relationships and decision authority. That includes which parts of product development they will handle, whether they will lead or support fittings, how they work with designers, buyers, merchandisers and suppliers, and which technical decisions they can make themselves. We also need to understand the escalation boundary. Who checks their work? Which decisions stay with someone else? Where could their responsibility increase once they understand the product and business?Candidate evidence can then be assessed against the actual role. Preparing a fitting is different from leading one. Recording a technical correction is different from deciding what that correction should be. Communicating with a supplier is different from being responsible for resolving the issue. Those distinctions give our recruitment process something meaningful to assess rather than relying on the assistant title alone.
When Would Encore Recruitment Recommend an Assistant Garment Technologist?
Encore Recruitment recommends an assistant garment technologist when our understanding and assessment give us reason to see potential for the candidate and client to work together at the level of responsibility the role requires. For one vacancy, that could mean someone who can manage accurate measurements, fitting records, samples and technical information while working with an experienced colleague. For another, it could mean someone already handling fittings, suppliers, testing or defined product responsibilities with greater independence. The opportunity is discussed with the candidate before we represent them. Their response matters: they need to understand what they would be taking responsibility for and want that move.If they want to proceed and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client. That assessment sits behind the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What are the responsibilities of an assistant garment technologist?
Responsibilities vary between businesses. They can include measuring and assessing samples, preparing or conducting fittings, updating technical information, supporting testing and quality activities, communicating with suppliers, and tracking the product through development. Some assistant roles also include ownership of defined products or technical decisions.
How much experience should an assistant garment technologist have?
There is no fixed experience threshold. What matters is what someone has already handled and how independently they handled it. Previous roles, placements and technical work can all provide evidence against the responsibility of the vacancy.
What is the difference between an assistant and junior garment technologist?
There is no consistent industry-wide boundary. Assistant and junior garment technologist responsibilities overlap materially between businesses. Compare the actual scope: product ownership, fitting responsibility, supplier contact, technical judgement, approval authority and what still needs to be escalated.
Hiring an Assistant Garment Technologist?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where support ends, where ownership begins and what you need this person to handle.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Assistant Garment Technologist Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Junior Garment Technologist Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides junior garment technologist recruitment as part of our wider garment technologist recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At junior level, the title does not tell you what someone will be expected to decide. One role may involve leading fittings, managing defined products or categories and working directly with suppliers. Another may place more decisions with a garment technologist, senior garment technologist or technical manager. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to understand what sits with the junior, what sits elsewhere and what the person will need to be ready to take on. That gives us a clearer basis for assessing candidates against the role.Key Takeaways

The title does not define the responsibility. What matters is what the junior garment technologist will handle, decide and take responsibility for.

The same activity can carry different levels of responsibility. Leading a fitting, reviewing a test or working with a supplier means something different when the junior is expected to make the technical decision rather than support someone else’s.

An Encore Recruitment recommendation at junior level reflects: what the role asks the person to decide for themselves; evidence of what the candidate has already handled and where they have needed to escalate; and the candidate’s decision that they want to be put forward for that responsibility.

What Will This Junior Garment Technologist Be Expected to Decide for Themselves?
A junior garment technologist may be expected to make technical decisions within defined product or category responsibility while escalating issues that sit outside their authority. That could include leading fittings, deciding and communicating technical corrections, working with grading or blocks, progressing products through approval activity, reviewing testing or care-label information and working directly with suppliers or factories. The exact mix varies between businesses. What matters is the responsibility attached to the activity. Attending a fitting is different from leading one. Recording a correction is different from deciding what needs to change. Communicating with a supplier is different from being responsible for resolving the technical issue.Assistant and junior responsibilities can also overlap between businesses. That means the title cannot be used as shorthand for readiness. We need to understand what this junior role asks someone to take responsibility for, then assess whether the candidate has the experience and potential to take that on.
What Does Encore Recruitment Need to Understand About the Role?
Encore Recruitment needs to understand the scope of the role, where technical decisions sit and what the junior garment technologist will be responsible for progressing themselves. That includes the products or categories involved, whether they will lead fittings, which approvals sit with them, how they work with designers, buyers, suppliers, factories, quality or compliance teams, and who takes responsibility when an issue moves beyond their scope. The escalation points matter too. Which technical problems should they resolve themselves? Which need another person’s approval? Does final sign-off sit with the technical team, another internal function or a retailer customer? Those details change what relevant experience looks like. Someone may have worked on the same type of product without carrying the same level of responsibility. Someone else may have handled similar decisions under a different title. This gives our recruitment process something specific to assess rather than relying on the junior title alone.
What Does Encore Recruitment Assess Before Making a Recommendation?
Encore Recruitment assesses whether the candidate’s experience, technical judgement and potential make sense for what this client needs the junior garment technologist to take on.We explore what the candidate has handled themselves, how they have approached technical decisions and where they have needed to escalate. We then consider whether that experience gives us enough evidence of their potential to take on the responsibility of this role. The client context is part of that assessment. Product scope, approval routes, supplier relationships, team structure and the support around the role can all change what is being asked of the person. If the candidate has the context they need to decide, wants to be put forward and our assessment supports the recommendation, we proceed under the guidelines of the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What are the responsibilities of a junior garment technologist?
Responsibilities vary between businesses. They can include leading fittings, issuing technical comments, working with grading and sizing, reviewing tests or care labels, communicating with suppliers and progressing products through approval activity. The level of responsibility attached to those activities varies too.
What is the difference between an assistant and a junior garment technologist?
There is no consistent industry-wide dividing line. Some assistant roles carry substantial product responsibility, while some junior garment technologist roles work with greater technical authority. Compare what the person handles, what they can decide and what still needs to be escalated.
What is the difference between a junior and a garment technologist?
A garment technologist role may carry broader or more established responsibility for products, categories and technical decisions. A junior role can already include significant responsibility, so the distinction needs to come from scope, authority and accountability rather than title alone.
Hiring a Junior Garment Technologist?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what you need them to handle, decide and take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Junior Garment Technologist Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Garment Technologist Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior garment technologist recruitment as part of our wider garment technologist recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At senior level, the title does not explain what has become senior. In one business, it may be the complexity of the product or technical decisions. In another, it may be broader category scope, supplier responsibility, technical standards, influence across teams or responsibility for other people. Senior does not automatically mean line management. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to establish what sits behind the title. That gives us a clearer basis for representing the opportunity, assessing candidates and deciding who we are prepared to recommend.Key Takeaways

Seniority is about the nature of the responsibility, not years of experience. Greater complexity, wider scope, technical accountability, escalation responsibility and influence may all distinguish the role.

Senior does not automatically mean management. A senior garment technologist may remain closely involved in product while also becoming the person others turn to for difficult technical decisions or guidance.

An Encore Recruitment recommendation at senior level depends on: evidence of the responsibility the candidate has carried, how that relates to the vacancy and their decision that they want to be put forward.

What Makes a Senior Garment Technologist Role Genuinely Senior?
A senior garment technologist role becomes genuinely senior when responsibility extends beyond independently handling defined product work into greater complexity, wider scope, technical accountability, influence or responsibility for others. That could mean leading difficult fittings, resolving complex construction or pattern issues, taking final technical decisions within an agreed scope, becoming an escalation point, influencing standards or addressing recurring supplier and quality issues. Some Senior roles also include developing or managing other technologists. The distinction is not simply doing more of the same work.Resolving an issue on an allocated style is different from being the person others turn to when the technical route is unclear. Working with a supplier is different from influencing how recurring quality problems are addressed. Not every senior role contains all of these elements. What matters is which responsibilities make this role senior in your business.
What Needs To Be Understood Before Recruiting a Senior Garment Technologist?
Encore Recruitment needs to establish what makes the role senior in this business before the search begins. That includes the product or category scope, the technical complexity involved, which decisions sit with the senior garment technologist and what reaches them as an escalation. We also need to understand the responsibility beyond their own product work. Are they expected to influence technical standards? Improve supplier performance? Resolve recurring quality issues? Guide other technologists? Manage people? Which decisions remain with a technical manager, head of technical or another function? The working relationships matter too. A senior garment technologist may need to influence design, product development, production, buying, merchandising, quality, compliance, suppliers or factories without having formal authority over them. Some senior roles include management responsibilities and wider technical leadership. Others remain strongly hands-on. Technical manager roles may shift further towards responsibility for the function, its standards, team objectives, KPIs and processes. These distinctions define the role Encore Recruitment is being asked to represent through our recruitment process.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation at Senior Level?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation at senior level depends on evidence that the candidate has handled responsibility relevant to what the role requires. We look at what the candidate has been responsible for: the technical decisions they have made, the issues they have resolved, the scope they have covered and the influence or responsibility they have had beyond their own work.A candidate may have held a senior title without carrying the same level of technical accountability, escalation responsibility, category scope or responsibility for others. Another may have carried comparable responsibility under a different title. We also make sure the candidate has enough context about the role to decide whether they want to be put forward for it.If they do, and their experience gives us enough reason to recommend them for the responsibility involved, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What are the responsibilities of a senior garment technologist?
Responsibilities vary between businesses. They can include complex fitting and technical decisions, broader category responsibility, supplier and quality issues, technical standards, escalation work and developing other technologists. Some senior roles also include formal people management.
What is the difference between a garment technologist and senior garment technologist?
A garment technologist can already carry independent responsibility for products, categories and technical decisions. Seniority may add greater complexity, broader scope, technical accountability, responsibility for escalated issues or wider influence across suppliers and teams.
Does a senior garment technologist always manage other people?
No. Some senior garment technologists mentor, guide or line-manage colleagues. Others remain hands-on technical roles with broader scope or greater decision responsibility. People management should be established as part of the specific role rather than assumed from the senior title.
Hiring a Senior Garment Technologist?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what makes the role senior in your business and what you need the person to take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Garment Technologist Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Garment Technical Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides garment technical manager recruitment as part of our wider garment technologist recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At technical manager level, the title does not show how far responsibility extends across the technical function. Some senior garment technologist roles already include people management, supplier responsibility, technical standards and escalation work. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to establish what sits with the technical manager, what remains with the wider team and where final technical accountability sits.Key Takeaways

Technical management changes the scale of accountability. Responsibility may extend beyond products or categories into standards, people, suppliers, priorities and technical outcomes across the function.

Management does not replace technical judgement. A technical manager may remain the senior technical reference while other technologists retain product-level decisions.

An Encore Recruitment recommendation at technical manager level reflects both sides: the accountability the client needs, the evidence of what the candidate has already carried, and the candidate’s decision that they want to be put forward for that responsibility.

What Is a Technical Manager Accountable For Across the Technical Function?
A technical manager can be accountable for how the technical function performs, not only for the technical work they personally handle. That can include setting or maintaining standards for measurements, grading, quality, testing and compliance. It may also include developing other technologists, overseeing technical priorities and deciding how escalated issues should be handled. The distinction from senior garment technologist is not simply line management. Senior roles can already include mentoring, management, complex technical decisions and supplier responsibility. Managing technologists is different from being accountable for how the technical function performs.A senior garment technologist may take responsibility for difficult categories or major escalations. A technical manager may be accountable for the framework around those decisions: what standards apply, how exceptions are handled and whether recurring problems lead to changes in suppliers or technical practice.
What Needs to Be Understood Before Recruiting a Technical Manager?
Encore Recruitment needs to establish what the person will lead, what remains delegated and where final technical accountability sits. That includes the team structure, product and category coverage, supplier base, reporting line and working relationships with design, buying, product, production, merchandising, quality and compliance.Decision boundaries matter. Will the technical manager set standards while garment technologists retain product-level decisions? Which issues reach them for escalation? Are they responsible for team development? What authority do they have over supplier action or technical processes? We also need to understand what they are expected to improve, protect or keep consistent. That could include team capability, supplier performance, recurring quality issues or technical standards. Those distinctions give our recruitment process something specific to assess rather than treating management experience as sufficient.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation at Technical Manager Level?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation at technical manager level depends on understanding the accountability the client is offering and evidence that the candidate has carried comparable responsibility beyond their own technical work.We look at what has genuinely sat with them: the standards they have been responsible for, the decisions and escalations that have reached them, the people they have led or developed, and which technical outcomes they have been accountable for.A candidate may have managed a technical team without carrying responsibility for the wider function. Another may have held a senior garment technologist title while already setting standards, leading people and resolving escalations across several categories.People management alone does not establish technical manager-level accountability. The candidate also needs enough context about the opportunity to decide whether they want to take on that level of responsibility across the team, standards, priorities and technical outcomes. If they want Encore Recruitment to put them forward, and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What are the responsibilities of a technical manager in garment technology?
Responsibilities vary between businesses. They can include leading the technical team, setting technical and quality standards, managing escalations, developing people, working with suppliers and improving technical processes and outcomes.
What is the difference between a senior garment technologist and a technical manager?
There is no consistent industry-wide boundary. Senior garment technology roles can already include management, supplier responsibility and complex technical decisions. A technical manager role may extend further into accountability for the technical function, including its standards, people, processes and outcomes.
Does a technical manager still need technical garment experience?
Yes. Garment Technical Manager Hiring

Technical Manager

Recruitment services for garment technologists and fashion businesses across the UK.

Garment Technologist Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire garment technologists across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers. The title alone does not tell you what the person will own or decide. One garment technologist may take independent responsibility for a product category, fittings, approvals and supplier communication. Another may work within narrower technical boundaries with final decisions sitting elsewhere. Before the search begins, Encore Recruitment works with you to establish what this person needs to own, which decisions sit with them and what should be escalated. That gives us a clearer basis for representing the role, assessing candidates and deciding who we are prepared to recommend.Key Takeaways

The title does not define the responsibility. Product scope, technical judgement, approval authority, supplier relationships and escalation routes all shape the role.

A garment technologist can already carry substantial independent ownership. Seniority should not be assumed simply because someone leads fittings, manages suppliers or makes technical decisions.

An Encore Recruitment recommendation reflects both sides. We understand the responsibility the client is offering, assess evidence of what the candidate has handled, give the candidate enough context to decide and then make our own assessment on whether to recommend them.

What Does a Garment Technologist Take Responsibility For?
A garment technologist can take independent responsibility for defined products, categories and technical decisions through development and production.Depending on the business, that can include leading fittings, deciding technical corrections, managing specifications and grading, reviewing testing and compliance information, progressing approvals, working directly with suppliers or factories and resolving construction, fit or quality issues. The activity alone does not tell you the level of responsibility. Attending a fitting is different from leading one. Recording a correction is different from deciding what needs to change. Communicating with a supplier is different from taking responsibility for resolving the issue.Garment technologists also work across the wider product process. They may work with designers on fit and construction, product developers and production teams on samples and approvals, buyers or merchandisers where technical decisions affect the product or timing, and suppliers or factories to resolve technical issues.Business context matters too. A retailer may place more responsibility around fit consistency, testing, product approval and quality standards. A supplier may require someone to work across several retailer requirements, approval routes and customer standards. The recruitment question is therefore not simply whether someone has worked on similar products. It is what they were responsible for within that work. What did they own? Which decisions did they make? What could they approve? When did they need to escalate? Where did final technical accountability sit?
How Does the Role Change at Different Levels?
Responsibility across garment technology roles tends to change through the level of support, independence and accountability involved.Titles are not always standardised across fashion and lifestyle businesses. A trainee, assistant, Junior, garment technologist, senior garment technologist or technical manager title can carry different responsibilities depending on the product, team structure and where technical decisions sit.At earlier levels, the person may contribute to technical activity while developing judgement, or handle defined work with clearer support and approval around them.A junior garment technologist may already make technical decisions within a defined scope, lead fittings and work directly with suppliers, while still escalating issues that sit outside their authority. At established garment technologist level, independent ownership becomes more central. The person may take responsibility for products or categories, lead technical decisions within their scope, progress approvals and manage supplier or factory relationships without routine supervision.A senior garment technologist may carry greater complexity, wider category responsibility, become an escalation point or influence technical standards and other people beyond their own allocated work.A technical manager may move further into accountability for how the technical function performs, including standards, people, priorities, processes and wider technical outcomes. These distinctions help define what level of responsibility a particular vacancy carries before the search begins. For more detail on how responsibility changes around the main garment technologist role, read our dedicated sub-role pages:

Trainee Garment Technologist

Assistant Garment Technologist

Junior Garment Technologist

Senior Garment Technologist

Technical Manager

Garment Technologist Salaries
Garment technologist salaries reflect more than the job title. The level of technical responsibility, product or category scope, supplier or customer exposure, location and scale of ownership can all affect salary. Indicative salary ranges include:

Trainee Garment Technologist: £25,000

Assistant Garment Technologist: £25,000–£28,000

Junior Garment Technologist: £28,000–£34,000

Garment Technologist: £34,000–£45,000

Senior Garment Technologist: £45,000–£60,000

Technical Manager: £60,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026.Salary ranges are indicative and should be considered alongside the responsibility and scope of the individual role.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation starts with understanding what the client needs the garment technologist to take responsibility for. That includes product or category scope, technical decision boundaries, approval routes, supplier or customer relationships, team structure and escalation points.Candidate assessment can then focus on evidence rather than title alone. We explore what the candidate has handled themselves, which technical decisions they have made, what they have owned and where they have needed support or escalation. We also give the candidate enough context about the opportunity to understand the responsibility involved and decide whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them.If they want to proceed, and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard. That recommendation is Encore Recruitment’s assessment. The hiring decision remains with the client and candidate.Explore how the Recommendation Standard sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What does a garment technologist do?
A garment technologist helps ensure garments can be developed and produced to the required technical and quality standards. Responsibilities can include fittings, specifications, grading, testing, approvals, supplier communication, construction, quality and technical problem-solving.
What is the difference between a junior garment technologist and a garment technologist?
There is no consistent industry-wide dividing line. A junior garment technologist can already carry significant technical responsibility. An established garment technologist may have broader or more consistent ownership of products, categories and technical decisions, with less routine supervision.
What is the difference between a garment technologist and a senior garment technologist?
A garment technologist can already take independent responsibility for products, categories and technical decisions. A senior garment technologist role may add greater complexity, wider scope, escalation responsibility, broader influence or responsibility for other people.
Do garment technologists work with suppliers and factories?
Yes. Many garment technologists work directly with suppliers or factories on samples, fittings, technical corrections, testing, approvals, construction and quality issues. The level of authority within those relationships varies between businesses.
Hiring a Garment Technologist?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what this person needs to own, decide and take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering Your Next Garment Technologist Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Fashion & Lifestyle HR Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses ask Encore Recruitment to help them hire HR professionals.Fashion and lifestyle professionals ask us to help them find HR opportunities. We find, assess and recommend people they’d want to work with.Key Takeaways

HR recruitment across fashion and lifestyle: We recruit from HR assistant to Head of HR and People leadership roles for brands, retailers, suppliers and importers across fashion, accessories, footwear, beauty and homeware.

Understand, find and filter: We understand what you’re trying to achieve, find people who could help, and filter what we find through that understanding.

Assess, qualify and recommend: We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we’re prepared to recommend. We make the recommendation. You decide what happens next.

HR Recruitment Starts for Different Reasons
Businesses recruit HR professionals to support growth, introduce greater structure or help people and managers through organisational change. HR professionals may consider a move because they want broader responsibility, greater leadership exposure or more influence over people decisions. For businesses and HR professionals, the starting point changes what we need to understand and explore.
What if Your Business Has Outgrown its Existing People Support?
Growth can create pressure on managers, founders and teams.Informal conversations and processes may no longer provide the structure needed around onboarding, employee relations, policies, communication and workforce planning. You may need someone who can introduce greater consistency as the organisation grows.
What if Organisational Change is Creating New Challenges?
Organisational change can create new demands for HR support.A new leadership team, retail expansion, departmental restructuring or changing workforce expectations may require someone who can support managers, guide communication and navigate sensitive situations while change takes place.
What if You're Ready to Influence More Than Your Current Position Allows?
Career progression in HR can mean taking on broader responsibility and greater influence. For some professionals, that involves greater exposure to leadership teams, people management, organisational development or shaping workforce decisions.
What if You Want to Work Closer to the Decisions Being Made?
Some HR professionals want greater involvement in how organisations develop, communicate and support their people.A move may offer the opportunity to contribute earlier, support wider initiatives or work more directly with senior leaders.
HR Careers, Responsibilities and Salaries
HR responsibilities vary according to the structure, size and priorities of the organisation. Two businesses can recruit someone with the same HR title and expect them to contribute in different ways.
The Same HR Title Can Mean Different Things
One HR Manager may focus on employee relations, policy development and leadership support. Another may spend more time on recruitment, onboarding, workforce planning and operational people management.Retailers, brands, suppliers and importers can also structure HR differently.A founder-led brand may require broader responsibility within a lean structure. A larger retailer may require support across stores, head office functions and regional teams. An importer or supplier may involve communication across operational, sourcing and commercial departments. The title provides a starting point. The context explains what the position is expected to achieve.
HR Responsibilities Change as Careers Progress
HR careers can develop through roles including:

HR Assistant

HR Coordinator

HR Advisor

Senior HR Advisor

HR Manager

Senior HR Manager

Head of HR

As careers progress, responsibility can extend beyond administration and employee support into leadership partnering, organisational development, workforce planning, management coaching and wider business influence.
HR Salaries Reflect Responsibility, Experience and Market Demand
Salary expectations are influenced by workforce size, organisational complexity, leadership exposure, location and market demand.Typical salary ranges across parts of the UK fashion and lifestyle sector include:

HR Assistant: £25,000–£30,000

HR Coordinator: £28,000–£35,000

HR Advisor: £32,000–£40,000

Senior HR Advisor: £40,000–£50,000

HR Manager: £40,000–£60,000

Senior HR Manager: £60,000–£75,000

Head of HR: £75,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026Salary ranges are indicative. Offered salaries must reflect the final contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
How We Approach HR Recruitment

Understanding What You're Looking For
For a business, we start with why you're recruiting and what the HR professional needs to contribute. This can include workforce structure, management challenges, growth plans, employee relations, reporting lines, communication expectations and the purpose of the hire. For a professional, we explore what you're doing now and what you want next, including career ambitions, leadership exposure, people management, organisational development, working environment and future responsibilities.Because HR responsibilities differ between businesses, we consider experience in the context of workforce structure, organisational complexity, responsibilities and working environment rather than relying on title alone.A job title or CV gives us information. The conversation gives us the context needed to use it.
Finding HR Professionals and Opportunities
For clients, what we learn helps us identify HR professionals whose experience gives us a reason to have a conversation. For professionals, it helps us identify opportunities that may support what you're looking for next. Not every person identified leads to a conversation. Not every opportunity discussed leads to representation.Discover how we approach our recruitment process.
Before We Make a Recommendation
Finding an HR professional is not the same as recommending one.Every recommendation is shaped by conversations, questions and assessment throughout our process. Recommendations reflect what we learn about the position, organisation, individual and circumstances surrounding the decision. The opportunity is discussed with the candidate first. We don't represent someone for a role until they have agreed that they want us to do so.Read the guidelines behind our Recommendation Standard.
Clients and Candidates Decide What Happens Next
We make the recommendation. Clients and candidates decide what happens next.A client may want to interview, ask questions or not proceed. A candidate may continue, need more information or decide the opportunity isn't for them.Where both sides continue, we support interviews, feedback and offer discussions through to the start. If either side doesn't want to proceed, we understand why and agree what happens next.
FAQ

What does an HR professional do?
HR professionals support areas including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, workforce communication, policy implementation, management guidance and organisational development. Their responsibilities depend on the organisation and level of the position.
Do HR roles differ between smaller brands and larger retailers?
Yes. Smaller organisations may require broader responsibility across several areas. Larger retailers and group structures can involve greater workforce complexity, multi-site support or more defined HR responsibilities.
What helps HR professionals progress into leadership positions?
Progression can involve greater responsibility for employee relations, workforce planning, management support, organisational development and influencing decisions across an organisation.
Hiring an HR Professional?
Start a conversation about what you’re looking for.Submit a Vacancy→ or Contact Us→
Considering an HR Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs→ or Contact Us→

Fashion HR Hiring

Recruitment services for trainee import merchandisers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Trainee Import Merchandiser Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides trainee import merchandiser recruitment as part of our wider import merchandiser recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At trainee level, the question is not whether someone can already perform the work of an established import merchandiser. It is what they can contribute from the start, what they can learn with supervision and where responsibility can begin to develop. Before the search begins, we establish what the role involves, what the person needs to bring and which decisions remain with more experienced colleagues. That gives clients a clearer brief and candidates a clearer opportunity to consider.Key Takeaways

A trainee role should separate starting contribution from what will be learned. The brief should show what someone needs to bring from the start and what the business is prepared to teach.

Potential matters alongside previous experience. Evidence may come from study, retail, administration or another environment where the person has shown accuracy, organisation, follow-through and good escalation judgement.

A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. Encore Recruitment looks for evidence of learning potential, accuracy, follow-through and sound escalation judgement, alongside what the trainee will be expected to learn with support. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to want to take that step. Only then do we recommend the candidate to the client.

What Should a Trainee Import Merchandiser Be Ready to Contribute From the Start?
From the start, a trainee import merchandiser should be able to keep information accurate, organise actions, follow work through and recognise when something needs escalating. They do not need to arrive as an established import merchandiser.Depending on the business, they may also begin to work with product or order information, samples, lab dips, artwork, packaging or critical-path updates as they learn how development, production and delivery connect. The evidence does not need to come from a previous import merchandiser role. It may come from fashion study, retail, administration or another environment where accuracy, organisation and follow-through can be demonstrated. The brief should separate what someone needs before joining from what the business is prepared to teach.
What Can They Begin to Handle With Supervision?
With supervision, a trainee import merchandiser may begin to track samples, lab dips, artwork or packaging, update critical-path information and contact suppliers for information. Those activities do not automatically give them authority over the decision attached to them.Updating a date is not deciding how a delay will be recovered. Chasing a sample is not approving it. Contacting a supplier does not mean agreeing cost, production or delivery changes. The role therefore needs clear boundaries. What can the trainee complete independently? What needs review? What can they communicate externally? At what point should they escalate? The answer will vary by business, product and team structure. For a candidate, those boundaries show what they will be exposed to, what they will handle themselves and how responsibility could develop as their judgement grows.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend a Trainee Import Merchandiser?
We first define what the trainee needs to contribute, what will be learned with supervision and where decision authority sits. We then assess candidates against that context before applying our Recommendation Standard. For this role, our recruitment process looks for evidence such as accurate information handling, organisation, follow-through, learning, recognising when something needs escalating and, where required, communicating with suppliers under direction. The opportunity is recommended to the candidate first. We explain the role, its responsibilities and the environment they would be joining. If they want to proceed, we obtain their agreement before identifying or submitting them to the client.Only then, where our assessment supports it, do we recommend the candidate to the client. That recommendation reflects our judgement that there is enough clarity on both sides for them to decide whether they want to work together.
FAQ

Does a trainee import merchandiser need previous import experience?
Not necessarily. The requirement depends on the role. Relevant evidence may come from education, retail, administration or another environment where someone has demonstrated accuracy, organisation, follow-through and an ability to learn.
How much responsibility should a trainee import merchandiser have?
There is no single level that applies across every business. A trainee may complete defined tasks independently while decisions, commitments and exceptions remain with a more experienced colleague. The brief should state where those boundaries sit.
What is the difference between a trainee and assistant/junior import merchandiser?
A trainee import merchandiser role is more likely to centre on learning, supervised contribution and developing judgement. An assistant/junior import merchandiser role may include responsibility for defined orders, stages, suppliers or customer activity. The difference is clearer in the work and decisions attached to the role than in the title alone.
Hiring a Trainee Import Merchandiser?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about where the role sits in your team, what the person needs to contribute and how you want their responsibility to develop.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Trainee Import Merchandiser Role?
Start a conversation about the experience you want to build and the responsibility you are ready to take on.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Trainee Import Merchandisers Hiring

Recruitment services for senior import merchandisers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Senior Import Merchandiser Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior import merchandiser recruitment as part of our wider import merchandiser recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At senior level, the title alone does not show what has changed. The difference may sit in larger or harder accounts, customer exposure, supplier responsibility, commercial judgement, difficult recovery decisions or leadership of others.Seniority shows in the decisions, complexity and consequences attached to the role. Before search begins, we establish what is different from an established import merchandiser role, which decisions sit with the person and where approval still sits elsewhere.Key Takeaways

Senior can mean different things in different businesses. Larger accounts, harder sourcing routes, customer responsibility, supplier negotiation, difficult escalations or leadership may all shape the role.

The evidence sits in what changed as responsibility increased. Look at the decisions made, problems resolved, trade-offs considered and outcomes carried, not years or workload alone.

A senior recommendation needs evidence behind the step up. Encore Recruitment looks at wider scope, harder decisions, escalation ownership and customer or supplier responsibility. The candidate also needs a clear view of what is broader in the role and to want to take that step. Only then do we recommend the candidate to the client.

What Could Make an Import Merchandiser Role Senior?
A senior import merchandiser role may involve larger or more complex accounts, harder sourcing routes, wider customer or supplier responsibility, or decisions that carry greater consequence. That could mean handling difficult delivery issues, working across more complex product or factory networks, negotiating with suppliers, managing sensitive customer conversations or becoming the point others turn to when an issue cannot be resolved at an earlier stage. In some supplier businesses, the role may also move closer to account management through greater customer contact and responsibility for service or account issues. The dividing line should come from the actual remit, not the title.People leadership may form part of the role, though it is not required. A senior import merchandiser may guide colleagues or act as an escalation point without formally managing a team. The brief should make clear what has genuinely changed from import merchandiser level.
What Decisions Could Sit With the Role?
A senior import merchandiser may resolve more difficult issues and make decisions within broader limits, while final commercial approval may still sit elsewhere.Resolving a delivery problem is different from accepting the commercial consequence. Negotiating with a supplier is different from having final cost approval.Managing a customer issue is different from committing the business to a revised commercial position. Guiding colleagues is different from carrying formal people-management responsibility. The role should set out which problems the person can resolve themselves, what they can agree with customers or suppliers, and when senior leadership needs to step in.For candidates, that shows whether the opportunity is broader through account responsibility, decision-making, customer or supplier exposure, leadership, or a combination of these.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend a Senior Import Merchandiser?
We first establish what makes the role senior in that business. We then assess candidates against that context before applying our Recommendation Standard. For this level, our recruitment process looks for evidence behind the title: difficult recovery decisions, competing cost-quality-delivery pressures, supplier negotiation, customer communication, wider account or range responsibility and examples of where the candidate became the escalation point. We also establish what still required approval. Seniority does not automatically mean final authority over cost, margin, customer commitments, claims or people. We recommend the opportunity to the candidate first. If they want to proceed, we gain their agreement before identifying or submitting them to the client.Where our assessment supports it, we then recommend the candidate.
FAQ

Does a senior import merchandiser need to manage a team?
No. People leadership may form part of the role, though seniority can also come through account complexity, customer responsibility, supplier judgement, commercial input or handling difficult escalations.
What is the difference between an import merchandiser and a senior import merchandiser?
The difference is clearer in the work than in years or workload alone. A senior import merchandiser may carry broader accounts, harder issues, wider customer or supplier responsibility, or greater ownership of difficult decisions.
Can a senior import merchandiser overlap with an account manager?
Yes, particularly in supplier businesses. A senior import merchandiser may have significant customer contact and account responsibility. The brief should establish who owns the customer relationship, which commercial decisions sit with the role and where account management begins.
Hiring a Senior Import Merchandiser?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what makes the role senior in your business, which decisions sit with it and where approval remains elsewhere.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Import Merchandiser Role?
Start a conversation about the responsibility you already carry, the decisions you make and what you want to take on next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Import Merchandisers Hiring

Recruitment services for import merchandiser managers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Import Merchandising Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides import merchandising manager recruitment as part of our wider import merchandiser recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Businesses may use the title import merchandising manager for roles with very different remits. In one business, the role may remain hands-on with accounts, suppliers and critical-path activity while also leading people. In another, the emphasis may move further into priorities, escalations, standards, supplier performance or team outcomes. The title tells you someone is expected to manage more. It does not tell you what they manage. Before the search begins, we establish what sits with the role, how hands-on it remains and which outcomes the person is expected to influence or carry.Key Takeaways

The management remit needs to be explicit. The role may involve people, workflow, accounts, suppliers, standards, priorities or a combination of these.

Manager does not automatically mean less hands-on. Some roles still carry operational responsibility, while others move further into work allocation, escalations, standards and team outcomes.

A manager recommendation needs evidence behind the responsibility. Encore Recruitment looks at what the person has led, changed, prioritised or improved, alongside the outcomes they were accountable for. The candidate also needs a clear view of the remit and to want that level of responsibility before we recommend them to the client.

What Does an Import Merchandising Manager Manage?
An import merchandising manager may manage people, workflow, priorities, escalations, supplier performance, standards or account delivery. The mix will depend on the business. The role may include allocating work across a team, setting priorities when several orders or accounts compete for attention, reviewing critical-path risk, handling escalations or improving how the function works. In some businesses, supplier performance or account delivery may also sit within the remit. In others, those areas may remain with senior merchandisers, account managers, production teams or directors. The brief should therefore go beyond the word manager. What sits with the role? What remains elsewhere? Which decisions can the person make themselves? Which outcomes are they expected to influence, improve or carry? That gives both client and candidate a clearer picture of what the management responsibility means.
How Hands-On Could the Role Be?
An import merchandising manager may still work directly with accounts, suppliers and critical-path issues, or may spend more time setting priorities, reviewing performance and supporting others.A hands-on manager may retain responsibility for difficult customer or supplier issues while also guiding the team.A more function-led role may focus on work allocation, escalation routes, standards, capacity, KPIs, supplier performance or process improvement.Neither model should be assumed from the title alone. The important questions are practical:

What work does the manager still own?

What do they allocate or review rather than complete themselves?

Which escalations remain with them?

What are they expected to change or improve?

For candidates, those answers show whether the role represents broader operational responsibility, people leadership, process ownership or a combination of these.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend an Import Merchandising Manager?
We first establish what the role manages, how hands-on it remains, which decisions sit with it and what outcomes the business expects. We then assess candidates against that context before applying our Recommendation Standard. For this level, our recruitment process looks for evidence such as how work has been allocated, how priorities have been set, which standards or controls have been introduced, how difficult escalations have been handled and what changed as a result.Where people leadership forms part of the role, we also look at how the candidate has supported, developed or directed others. The opportunity is recommended to the candidate first. We explain the management remit, how hands-on the role is and what responsibility sits with it.If they want to proceed, we gain their agreement before identifying or submitting them to the client.Where our assessment supports it, we then recommend the candidate.
FAQ

Is an import merchandising manager always a people manager?
No. Some roles include formal line management, while others may focus more on workflow, priorities, escalations, standards or account responsibility. The team structure and management remit should be clear in the brief.
What is the difference between a senior import merchandiser and an import merchandising manager?
There is no fixed industry-wide boundary. A senior import merchandiser may carry complex accounts, harder decisions and wider customer or supplier responsibility. A manager role may add responsibility for people, workflow, standards, priorities or function-level outcomes. The actual remit matters more than the title.
Does an import merchandising manager still work on accounts or orders?
They may do. Some roles remain hands-on with key accounts, suppliers or escalations, while others move further into team leadership and process oversight. The brief should show what the manager still handles personally and what sits with the wider team.
Hiring an Import Merchandising Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the role manages, how hands-on it needs to be and what you want the person to change, improve or take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Import Merchandising Manager Role?
Start a conversation about the responsibility you already carry, how you lead or influence others and the remit you want next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Import Merchandising Managers Hiring

Recruitment services for assistant/junior import merchandisers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides assistant/junior import merchandiser recruitment as part of our wider import merchandiser recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At this level, the title can cover different levels of responsibility. One role may focus on maintaining information, following actions and supporting more experienced colleagues. Another may give someone responsibility for defined orders, suppliers, critical-path stages or customer activity within agreed limits. The title gives you a starting point. The responsibility tells you the role. Before any search begins, we establish what the role supports, what responsibility could sit with it and which decisions remain elsewhere.Key Takeaways

Assistant and junior import merchandiser titles can cover different levels of responsibility. The brief should show whether the role is mainly support-led or includes responsibility for defined work.

The title only tells part of the story. Evidence comes from what the person has done, which decisions they have contributed to, what they have resolved and where support or approval was still needed.

A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. Encore Recruitment needs to establish whether the role is support-led or carries defined independent responsibility, and see evidence that the candidate’s experience or potential aligns with what the role requires. The candidate needs a clear view of the opportunity and also needs to want to take that step. Only then do we recommend the candidate to the client.

What Could an Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser Be Ready to Take On?
An assistant/junior import merchandiser could be ready to take responsibility for defined parts of the process, depending on their experience, potential and the support around the role. That may include purchase orders, supplier or compliance records, sample tracking, shipment updates, critical-path dates and following up delays. Some roles extend further into supplier evaluation, lead-time or MOQ negotiation, contingency planning or defined shipment approval. The evidence may come from a trainee or support role, or another environment where the candidate has shown accuracy, judgement, follow-through and readiness for defined responsibility. The brief should make clear what someone needs to bring from the start and where there is room to grow.
What Responsibility Could Sit With the Role?
The role may include progressing defined work, resolving some issues and making decisions within agreed limits, while other decisions remain with more experienced colleagues.Updating a critical-path date is different from deciding what should change when that date slips. Contacting a supplier is different from negotiating a lead time or MOQ.Preparing shipment information is different from approving shipment activity. Reporting a delay is different from coordinating the recovery route. The brief should set out what the person can progress themselves, what they can decide, what they can communicate externally and what still needs review or escalation. Those boundaries will vary by business context. For candidates, that shows whether the role remains mainly support-led or offers defined responsibility.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend an Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser?
We first establish what the role asks someone to support, where defined responsibility begins and which decisions sit elsewhere. We then assess candidates against that context before applying our Recommendation Standard. For this level, our recruitment process looks at the orders, suppliers or stages someone has worked with, the decisions they have contributed to, the problems they have helped resolve and where support was still needed. We also consider potential where the role offers a step up.We recommend the opportunity to the candidate first. We explain the responsibilities, decision boundaries and environment around the role.If they want to proceed, we gain their agreement before identifying or submitting them to the client.Where our assessment supports it, we then recommend the candidate.
FAQ

Is an assistant import merchandiser the same as a junior import merchandiser?
Not always. Some businesses use the titles for similar work, while others give one greater responsibility than the other. The clearer distinction comes from what the person is expected to progress, decide, resolve or escalate.
Should an assistant/junior import merchandiser work directly with suppliers?
They may do. The scope can range from requesting updates and following actions through to negotiating within agreed limits. The brief should make clear what they can communicate or agree themselves and what still needs approval.
What is the difference between a trainee and assistant/junior import merchandiser?
A trainee import merchandiser role is more likely to centre on learning, supervised contribution and developing judgement. An assistant/junior merchandiser role may include responsibility for defined orders, stages, suppliers or customer activity. The difference is clearer in the work and decisions attached to the role than in the title alone.
Hiring an Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the role needs someone to support, where responsibility could sit and which decisions remain elsewhere.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser Role?
Start a conversation about the responsibility you already have, the experience or potential you want recognised and what you want to take on next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Assistant Import Merchandisers Hiring

Recruitment services for import heads of merchandising and fashion businesses across the UK.

Head of Merchandising Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides head of merchandising recruitment as part of our wider import merchandiser recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.Head of merchandising can describe materially different leadership roles across fashion and lifestyle businesses. In one business, the role may centre on sales, stock, planning and trade. In another, it may lead product, range and market decisions. In a supplier or importer, the emphasis may sit with production, suppliers, critical paths and delivery. Some businesses combine elements of more than one.In the import merchandising route, the starting point is responsibility for suppliers, production and delivery. The remit may extend further depending on the business. The title suggests the level. The conversation defines the role. The role shapes the search. Before any search begins, the role needs to be clear: what sits within it, what sits elsewhere and what the person is being asked to take responsibility for. Encore Recruitment uses that context to shape the search and assess the evidence behind each candidate’s experience.Key Takeaways

Head of merchandising does not describe one consistent function. The role may centre on stock, planning and trade; product, range and market; production, suppliers and delivery; or a combination shaped by the business.

The brief needs to show why this head role exists. Is the business asking someone to strengthen trading, reshape the range, improve supplier or delivery performance, build the team, or bring more structure to the function?

The recommendation follows the role, not the title. We assess whether the candidate has led comparable work, carried the level of responsibility this role requires and can evidence what followed. The candidate also needs to see this version of head of merchandising clearly and want to take it on before we recommend them.

What Does the Title Mean in This Business?
Head of merchandising may describe leadership of stock, planning and trade; product, range and market; or production, suppliers and delivery. In retail merchandising, the role may include sales, stock, WSSI, OTB, forecasting, margin, markdown and trading performance. In product or market-led businesses, it may centre on assortment, pricing, range architecture and channel or regional decisions. In supplier and importer businesses, the emphasis may move towards production planning, factories, critical paths, customer communication and delivery.Hybrid businesses can bring several of these areas together. The work being led matters more than the title. Where the role is centred on stock, planning and trade, our retail merchandising recruitment page gives the closer context. Where it is centred on suppliers, production and delivery, our import merchandising recruitment page does.
What Is the Role Expected to Take Responsibility For?
The role may carry responsibility for trading performance, range direction, supplier performance, production and delivery, team performance or how the function is organised.Which of these matters depends on the business and why the role exists. The role may include setting priorities across teams, establishing how work is managed, improving visibility or control, resolving competing demands and carrying broader commercial or operational outcomes.A retail head of merchandising may be responsible for stock, margin and trading decisions across categories or channels. A supplier-side head of merchandising may be responsible for factory performance, capacity, critical paths and delivery across customers or product areas. A product-led head of merchandising may carry responsibility for assortment, pricing or market direction. The title may be the same. What the person is being asked to take responsibility for may not be.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend?
Encore Recruitment assesses candidates against the specific function, responsibility and business context of the role before applying our Recommendation Standard.Through our recruitment process, we first establish what the role covers, why it is needed and what the person is expected to take responsibility for.We look at what someone has led, what they were responsible for, what sat elsewhere, the decisions they made and what followed. We also look at how they handled competing priorities, worked across functions and led people or standards. The opportunity is discussed with the candidate first, including what the role covers and what will be expected of them. The candidate decides whether they want to explore that version of Head of Merchandising.Only with their agreement, and where the assessment supports it, do we recommend them to the client under our Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

Is head of merchandising the same role in every fashion or lifestyle business?
No. The title may describe retail planning and trading, product and market merchandising, supplier-side production merchandising or a hybrid role. The function being led needs to be established before the title becomes useful.
Is head of merchandising the next step after senior merchandiser or merchandising manager?
Not automatically. Progression varies with the business and the function being led. Relevant backgrounds may include merchandising, planning, trading, buying, production or commercial roles. What matters is the responsibility someone has taken on and the evidence behind it, rather than a fixed title sequence.
What should a hiring client define before recruiting a head of merchandising?
Start with the work the role covers, why it is needed and what the person will be responsible for. The brief should also show how the role works alongside buying, finance, production, sourcing, sales, technical and senior leadership.
Hiring a Head of Merchandising?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the role needs to cover and what you need the person to take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Head of Merchandising Role?
Start a conversation with Encore Recruitment about what you are responsible for now and the type of merchandising role you want to take on next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Head of Merchandising Hiring - Import

Head Of

Recruitment services for import merchandisers and fashion businesses across the UK.

Import Merchandiser Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire import merchandisers across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers.Import merchandisers help move product and orders through production towards delivery. Depending on the business, that can involve suppliers, factories, critical paths, purchase orders, samples, shipments, customer communication and delivery planning. The title alone does not show how much responsibility sits with the person. The title is a starting point. The production and delivery responsibility behind it tells us more. Before any search begins, we establish what the role covers, what the person needs to progress or resolve themselves and where other decisions sit.Key Takeaways

Import merchandising connects product decisions with production and delivery. The work can include suppliers, factories, critical paths, purchase orders, samples, shipments and customer or delivery activity.

The same title can carry different levels of responsibility. What someone progresses themselves, which problems they resolve and how they work with suppliers or customers can all change the role.

The recommendation follows the role, not the title. We assess the evidence behind the candidate’s experience against the responsibility in this vacancy. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to want Encore Recruitment to represent them before we recommend them to the client.

What Does an Import Merchandiser Take Responsibility For?
An import merchandiser helps progress product and orders through production towards delivery, working across suppliers, factories and internal teams. That may include purchase orders, sample progress, critical paths, supplier communication, production updates, shipment information and keeping customers or internal teams informed. The activity alone does not tell you how much responsibility sits with the person.Updating a critical-path date is different from deciding what should change when that date slips. Contacting a supplier is different from negotiating a lead time or MOQ. Following production is different from deciding how a delivery problem should be recovered. The same job title can therefore sit over work that is mainly support-led, defined independent responsibility or a wider remit involving customers, suppliers and difficult production decisions. The new sub-role pages reflect those distinctions directly.Import merchandisers also work across functions such as buying, design, product development, garment technology, production, sourcing, account management, logistics and finance. Those relationships do not mean every decision sits with the import merchandiser. What matters is knowing what the person is expected to progress, decide, communicate and escalate.
How Does the Role Change at Different Levels?
Responsibility changes through the level of support, independence, problem-solving and supplier, customer or team responsibility attached to the role.

At trainee level, the emphasis is more likely to sit with learning the development-to-delivery process, keeping information accurate, following actions through and developing judgement with supervision.

Assistant and junior roles may move into responsibility for defined orders, suppliers, critical-path stages or customer activity.

An established import merchandiser may carry more consistent responsibility for orders, suppliers, production progress and delivery activity without routine supervision.

At senior level, the difference may sit in larger or harder accounts, more complex sourcing routes, wider customer or supplier responsibility, difficult recovery decisions or becoming the point others turn to when an issue cannot be resolved earlier.

An import merchandising manager may remain hands-on with accounts and suppliers or move further into team priorities, workflow, standards, escalations and wider function performance.

Head of merchandising can be a possible progression route, though it is not one consistent final step. The title is also used for supplier-side production merchandising, product and market merchandising, and retail planning and trading.

For more detail:

Trainee Import Merchandisers

Assistant/Junior Import Merchandisers

Senior Import Merchandisers

Import Merchandising Managers

Head of Merchandising

Import Merchandiser Salaries
Import merchandiser salaries reflect more than the job title. Responsibility, business model, supplier or customer exposure, sourcing complexity and location can all affect salary. Indicative salary ranges include:

Trainee Import Merchandiser: £25,000

Assistant/Junior Import Merchandiser: £27,000–£32,000

Import Merchandiser: £32,000–£40,000

Senior Import Merchandiser: £40,000–£50,000

Import Merchandising Manager: £50,000–£75,000

Head of Merchandising: £75,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026.For roles rooted in supplier-side production and import merchandising, head of merchandising salaries can start around £75,000. The wider title covers different functions, so salary depends on the responsibilities being led, business size, team scope and wider commercial accountability.Any salary offered must also reflect contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation is based on the specific responsibility in the role, not the job title alone. We first establish what the person needs to progress, which suppliers, orders or customers sit within the role, which problems they are expected to resolve and where other decisions remain.Assessment then focuses on evidence. We explore the orders, suppliers, production stages or customer activity someone has worked with, what they handled themselves, what they resolved and when they needed support or escalation. At senior or manager level, that may extend into difficult recovery decisions, competing cost, quality and delivery pressures, wider supplier or customer responsibility, work allocation, standards or leadership. You can read more about how we work through our recruitment process. The opportunity is discussed with the candidate first. We explain the role and the responsibility involved. The candidate decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that role.Only with their agreement, and where our assessment supports it, do we recommend them to the client under our Recommendation Standard. The recommendation is our assessment. The client and candidate decide what happens next.
FAQ

What does an import merchandiser do?
An import merchandiser helps progress product and orders through production towards delivery. Responsibilities may include suppliers, factories, purchase orders, samples, critical paths, production progress, shipments and delivery information.
What is the difference between an import merchandiser and a retail merchandiser?
Import merchandising is more closely connected with suppliers, production, critical paths and delivery. Retail merchandising centres more on sales, forecasting, stock planning, WSSI, OTB, allocation and trading performance.
How does an import merchandiser role change at different levels?
There is no single industry-wide ladder. Earlier roles are more likely to include learning, support and defined responsibility. Established and senior roles may carry greater independence, harder problems and wider supplier or customer responsibility. Manager roles may add responsibility for people, workflow, standards or wider function performance.
Hiring an Import Merchandiser?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the role needs someone to progress, resolve and take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering Your Next Import Merchandiser Role?
Start a conversation with Encore Recruitment about the responsibility you carry now and what you want to take on next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Import Merchandisers

Recruitment services for marketing professionals and fashion businesses across the UK.

Fashion & Lifestyle Marketing Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses ask Encore Recruitment to help them hire marketing professionals.Fashion and lifestyle professionals ask us to help them find marketing opportunities. We find, assess and recommend people they’d want to work with.Key Takeaways

Marketing recruitment across fashion and lifestyle: We recruit from marketing assistant to marketing director roles for brands, retailers, suppliers and importers across fashion, accessories, footwear, beauty and homeware.

Understand, find and filter: We understand what you’re trying to achieve, find people who could help, and filter what we find through that understanding.

Assess, qualify and recommend: We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we’re prepared to recommend. We make the recommendation. You decide what happens next.

Marketing Recruitment Starts for Different Reasons
For businesses and marketing professionals, the starting point changes what we need to understand and explore.
What if Customer Growth Has Started to Slow?
A brand can have strong products, clear positioning and loyal customers, yet still struggle to reach new audiences consistently. You may be looking for someone who can strengthen acquisition activity, improve campaign planning, bring greater insight into customer behaviour or connect marketing activity more closely to commercial objectives.
What if Marketing Responsibilities Are Spread Across Too Many People?
As brands grow, marketing tasks can become fragmented across e-commerce, creative, social media, PR and leadership teams. You may need someone who can bring ownership, coordinate activity across channels, manage external agencies or create greater consistency across campaigns and customer communication.
What if You're Ready to Take Ownership of Bigger Campaigns?
You may have built experience delivering campaigns and now want greater ownership of what happens before, during and after launch. That could mean managing larger budgets, leading campaigns, expanding your channel responsibility, taking ownership of customer acquisition or mentoring colleagues. It could also mean stepping into management for the first time.
What if You're Looking for Greater Variety or Influence?
Your next move may be less about seniority and more about having a broader role in how marketing decisions are made. You may want to influence brand direction, work across additional channels, gain greater exposure to e-commerce performance, contribute to growth plans or work more closely with senior leadership.
Marketing Careers, Responsibilities and Salaries

The Same Marketing Title Can Mean Different Things
Marketing spans customer communication, brand development, e-commerce performance and commercial growth.Depending on the organisation, responsibilities may include content creation, campaign management, CRM, paid media, social media, influencer partnerships, PR, SEO, analytics, e-commerce support, customer retention, trade marketing or agency management. The title itself provides limited information. The commercial objectives behind the hire provide a clearer picture.
Different Businesses Need Different Things
Retailers, brands, suppliers, importers, wholesale businesses and DTC organisations organise marketing responsibilities differently.A wholesale supplier may place greater emphasis on retailer communication, launch materials and trade marketing. A DTC brand may focus more heavily on acquisition, retention and e-commerce growth. A fashion retailer may require close collaboration with trading, merchandising and buying teams throughout the season. The environment shapes the responsibilities and priorities behind the role.
Marketing Responsibilities Change as Careers Progress
Marketing careers can develop through the following stages:

Marketing Assistant

Marketing Executive

Marketing Manager

Senior Marketing Manager

Head of Marketing/Marketing Director

As careers progress, responsibility can expand beyond campaign delivery into budget ownership, team leadership, customer growth strategy, agency management, commercial planning and cross-functional decision-making.
Marketing Salaries Reflect Responsibility, Experience and Market Demand
Salary expectations are influenced by channel ownership, commercial responsibility, business size, location and market demand.Typical salary ranges across parts of the UK fashion and lifestyle sector include:

Marketing Assistant: £24,000–£28,000

Marketing Executive: £28,000–£38,000

Marketing Manager: £40,000–£60,000

Senior Marketing Manager: £60,000–£80,000

Head of Marketing/Marketing Director: £80,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026Salary ranges are indicative. Any salary offered must reflect contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
How We Approach Marketing Recruitment

Understanding What You're Looking For
For a business, we start with why you're recruiting and what the marketing professional needs to contribute: customer strategy, channel priorities, team structure, reporting lines, growth objectives, campaign expectations and the commercial context around the role. For a professional, we explore what you're doing now and what you want next: career ambitions, working environments, leadership aspirations, channel interests, commercial responsibility and longer-term goals.A job title or CV gives us information. The conversation gives us the context needed to use it.
Finding Marketing Professionals and Opportunities Worth Exploring
For clients, what we learn helps us identify marketing professionals whose experience gives us a reason to have a conversation.Because marketing responsibilities differ between businesses, we consider experience in the context of the channels, commercial objectives and responsibilities we're recruiting for rather than relying on title alone. For professionals, it helps us identify opportunities that may support what you're looking for next. Not every person identified leads to a conversation. Not every opportunity discussed leads to representation.Discover how we approach our recruitment process.
Before We Make a Recommendation
Finding a marketing professional is not the same as recommending one.Every recommendation is shaped by conversations, questions and assessment completed throughout our process. Recommendations reflect what we learn about the position, the organisation, the individual and the circumstances surrounding the decision. The opportunity is discussed with the candidate first. We don't represent someone for a role until they have agreed that they want us to do so.Read the guidelines behind our Recommendation Standard.
Clients and Candidates Decide What Happens Next
We don't decide who gets hired or who accepts an offer. We make a recommendation.
FAQ

What does a marketing professional do?
Marketing professionals connect brand, customer and commercial objectives. In fashion and lifestyle, responsibilities can span visual storytelling, campaigns, social media, CRM, paid media, PR, analytics, e-commerce and customer retention.
Do marketing professionals work closely with e-commerce teams?
In many organisations, yes. Marketing teams collaborate with e-commerce, trading, merchandising, creative, PR and leadership teams throughout campaign planning and delivery. The level of involvement depends on the business and responsibilities of the role.
What helps marketing professionals progress into senior positions?
Progression can involve greater campaign and budget ownership, broader channel responsibility, commercial awareness, team leadership, customer understanding and greater influence across functions. The balance depends on the individual's direction and the organisation.
Hiring a Marketing Professional?
Start a conversation about what you’re looking for.Submit a Vacancy→ or Contact Us→
Considering a Marketing Role?
Start a conversation about where you’d like to go.View Jobs→ or Contact Us→

Recruitment services for operations and support professionals and fashion businesses across the UK.

Operations & Support Recruitment

Fashion and lifestyle businesses use Encore Recruitment to hire operations and support professionals across brands, retailers, suppliers and importers.Operations and support covers different functions, from administration and executive support to wholesale coordination, customer service, business operations and finance. The title alone does not tell you what someone manages, coordinates or decides. An operations manager may oversee logistics and suppliers, while another manages wider business processes. A finance manager carries different technical and financial responsibilities. Before the search begins, we establish what the position needs to deliver, where responsibility sits and which decisions require specialist experience or authority.Key Takeaways

Operations and support covers distinct business functions. We recruit across administration, executive support, wholesale and sales support, customer operations, business operations, and finance and accounts within fashion and lifestyle businesses.

Responsibility depends on the function and employer. Roles differ through specialist knowledge, independence, complexity, decision-making authority and leadership. Similar titles can describe different work.

A recommendation needs evidence behind the title. We examine what someone has managed, coordinated and decided, what they want next and how the opportunity compares. If our assessment supports a recommendation and the candidate agrees to representation, we recommend them to the client.

What Do Operations and Support Professionals Take Responsibility For?
Operations and support professionals help businesses manage the information, activities, relationships and financial responsibilities that connect different parts of an organisation.Supporting an activity, coordinating its progress and taking responsibility for its outcome are different things. The work depends on the function.

Administration and office support: Administrators and office managers manage records, workplace arrangements, suppliers and office activities. Responsibility may extend from completing tasks to coordinating services and managing budgets.

Executive support: Personal assistants and executive assistants manage schedules, communication, information and priorities for directors and leadership teams. The level of discretion and delegated responsibility varies.

Wholesale and sales support: Sales administrators and wholesale coordinators manage customer orders, stock information, delivery requirements, returns and reporting. Commercial account ownership may sit elsewhere.

Customer service and operations: Customer service professionals manage enquiries, complaints, returns and service processes. Managers may take responsibility for teams, performance and improvements.

Business Operations: Operations coordinators and managers may oversee processes, systems, logistics, suppliers or operational partners. Their remit depends on the activities and decisions they own.

Finance and Accounts: Finance assistants, accounts assistants, credit controllers, accountants and finance managers handle transactions, reconciliations, financial reporting, budgets and controls. Technical responsibilities and qualifications differ by position.

Business structure changes how these functions work.A wholesale supplier may need someone coordinating customer orders and delivery information. A multichannel retailer may require support across customer enquiries, fulfilment and returns.Finance responsibilities can also differ. An accounts assistant may handle invoices and reconciliations, while a finance manager may be responsible for financial controls, reporting or stock and margin information. The recruitment question is what someone takes responsibility for, what they can decide and where their responsibility ends.
How Do Operations and Support Responsibilities Change?
Operations and support careers do not follow one progression. Responsibility develops differently across functions.

Administrative roles may develop from maintaining records and completing tasks towards managing workplace arrangements, coordinating services or supervising colleagues.

Executive support roles may involve increasing complexity, supporting multiple directors, managing confidential information or taking responsibility for executive priorities.

Wholesale and customer support roles may progress towards larger customer responsibilities, resolving escalations, managing processes or leading service teams.

Operations roles may develop from coordinating defined activities towards managing systems, operational partners, costs or wider business processes.

Finance roles offer transactional, specialist and professional accounting routes. Progression may involve credit control, management accounting, financial reporting, commercial responsibilities or finance leadership.

Greater responsibility does not always mean managing people. A professional may develop deeper technical knowledge, handle more complex work or take greater ownership of decisions.Moving between functions is also possible where experience transfers. However, coordinating wholesale orders does not automatically establish account management capability, just as general administration does not establish professional accounting expertise. The responsibilities, experience and development required determine the next step.
Operations and Support Salaries
Salary expectations vary across operations and support positions. Responsibilities, business size, department, location and commercial ownership all influence salary levels.Typical salary ranges across parts of the UK fashion and lifestyle sector include:

Administrator/Finance Assistant: £24,000–£30,000

Coordinator/Sales Support/Wholesale Support: £28,000–£38,000

Executive Assistant/Office Manager: £35,000–£55,000

Operations Manager/Finance Manager: £45,000–£75,000+

Salary ranges updated August 2026Salary ranges are indicative. Any salary offered must reflect contracted hours, the applicable age band and UK National Minimum Wage requirements.
What Sits Behind an Encore Recruitment Recommendation?
An Encore Recruitment recommendation starts with establishing what the business needs the person to manage, coordinate or take responsibility for. That includes the function, reporting lines, systems, customers, colleagues, specialist requirements and decisions associated with the role.We then speak with the candidate about their experience, responsibilities, the decisions they've made and what they want next. We examine the contribution behind the title. What did they personally manage? What happened when a customer issue escalated, information was missing or a process needed changing? What could they resolve independently, and what required approval? For finance positions, we explore the relevant accounting responsibilities, technical experience and qualifications. For operational or support positions, we consider the processes, relationships and level of ownership involved. We also explore the working environment, expectations and circumstances surrounding the opportunity. A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. The candidate reviews the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. If they agree, and our assessment supports the recommendation, we recommend them to the client under the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard. That recommendation is Encore Recruitment's assessment. The hiring decision remains with the client and candidate.Explore how our Recommendation Standard sits within our recruitment process.
FAQ

What types of operations and support roles do you recruit?
We recruit across administration, executive support, wholesale and sales support, customer service, business operations, finance and accounts for fashion and lifestyle brands, retailers, suppliers and importers.
What is the difference between an operations coordinator and an operations manager?
An Operations coordinator may organise activities, maintain information and resolve defined issues. An operations manager may carry broader responsibility for processes, costs, partners or teams. The distinction depends on the employer and the decisions assigned to each position.
Can professionals move between operations and support functions?
Potentially. Experience coordinating people, information, customers or processes may transfer between functions. Other moves require additional specialist knowledge, qualifications or experience, particularly in professional finance roles.
Hiring for an Operations or Support Position?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what this person needs to coordinate, manage, decide and take responsibility for.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Operations or Support Role?
Start a conversation about your experience, current responsibilities and what you want your next position to offer.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Recruitment services for trainee pattern cutters and fashion businesses across the UK.

Trainee Pattern Cutter Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides trainee pattern cutter recruitment as part of our wider pattern cutter recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At trainee level, the question is not whether someone can already perform the work of an established pattern cutter. It is what they can contribute from the start, what they can learn with supervision and where responsibility can begin to develop. Before the search begins, we establish what the role involves, what the person needs to bring and which technical decisions remain with more experienced colleagues. That gives clients a clearer brief and candidates a clearer opportunity to consider.Key Takeaways

Separate starting contribution from what can be taught. A trainee pattern cutter may bring pattern cutting education, garment construction knowledge, accuracy and practical foundations without previous industry experience.

Potential matters alongside experience. Learning from feedback, working accurately and recognising when to ask for support can be as important as having already worked in a pattern room.

A recommendation needs evidence of pattern cutting potential. Encore Recruitment looks for accuracy, technical foundations, response to feedback and when someone knows to ask for support, alongside what the trainee will learn in the role. The candidate also needs a clear view of the opportunity and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Should a Trainee Pattern Cutter Be Ready to Contribute From the Start?
A trainee pattern cutter should bring accuracy, basic pattern cutting foundations and the ability to learn from technical feedback. That evidence may come from education, training, practical projects or early industry exposure. Garment construction knowledge, measurement accuracy and basic pattern or block awareness can all be relevant.Manual pattern cutting, CAD and digitising requirements vary by business. Familiarity with Gerber, Lectra or Optitex may be useful where relevant, although software experience alone does not establish independent pattern cutting capability. The question is not simply, “Have they done this job before?” It is, “What foundations do they need to bring, and what are we prepared to teach?”
What Can They Begin to Handle With Supervision?
They can begin completing defined pattern cutting work where appropriate supervision and checking remain in place.Depending on the role, this may include pattern preparation, tracing, instructed amendments, working from established blocks, supporting toiles or samples, contributing during fittings and developing manual or digital pattern cutting skills. The distinction is responsibility.Supporting a first pattern is not the same as independently creating one. Attending a fitting does not mean diagnosing the pattern correction. Making an instructed amendment does not mean deciding what alteration is required.Independent first-pattern ownership, final fit decisions, grading responsibility and pattern approval should not be assumed. The brief should make clear what the trainee can attempt, what will be checked and when a technical question should be escalated.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend a Trainee Pattern Cutter?
We establish what the business needs from the person now, what can be developed with supervision and what evidence would demonstrate readiness for the role.We then assess the candidate against that context, including how they approach accuracy, feedback and asking for support.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

What experience can count for a trainee pattern cutter?
Relevant evidence may come from education, training, practical projects, placements or other pattern cutting activity. The requirement depends on what the employer needs the person to contribute from the start.
How much responsibility should a trainee pattern cutter have?
Enough to begin applying their technical foundations with appropriate supervision and checking. The role should make clear what they can complete, what remains under review and which decisions stay with more experienced colleagues.
What is the difference between a trainee and an assistant pattern cutter?
A trainee role centres on developing technical capability through supervised contribution. An assistant pattern cutter may begin completing defined pattern cutting work with some independent responsibility, although the boundary varies between businesses.
Hiring a Trainee Pattern Cutter?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the person needs to contribute from the start, what can be developed and where supervision will sit.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Trainee Pattern Cutter Role?
Start a conversation about what you already bring, what you want to develop and the Pattern Cutting responsibility you are ready to build towards.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Trainee Pattern Cutter Hiring

Recruitment services for assistant pattern cutters and fashion businesses across the UK.

Assistant Pattern Cutter Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides assistant pattern cutter recruitment as part of our wider pattern cutter recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At assistant level, the question is not simply whether someone has moved beyond trainee work. It is what pattern cutting activity they can complete with some independence, what still needs checking and where technical direction remains with a more experienced pattern cutter or manager. Before the search begins, we establish what the person is expected to create, amend or support, what can leave their hands without review and where responsibility needs to be escalated. That gives clients a clearer brief and candidates a clearer view of the responsibility the role carries.Key Takeaways

Assistant does not mean purely support work. An assistant pattern cutter may take responsibility for defined amendments, blocks, toiles, samples, fittings or CAD activity, depending on the business and pattern room structure.

Independence needs to be specific. The useful question is not whether someone has “worked independently”, but which patterns they personally drafted or amended, what somebody else checked and which technical decisions still needed direction.

A recommendation needs evidence of defined pattern cutting responsibility. Encore Recruitment looks at what the person has personally completed, how they have applied fitting or technical comments and where work still needed review or escalation. The candidate also needs a clear view of the role and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Pattern Cutting Work Can an Assistant Complete Independently?
An assistant pattern cutter can complete defined parts of the pattern cutting process independently, while other work may still need checking or technical direction.Depending on the role, this can include amendments, working from established blocks, preparing or developing toiles, digitising, CAD work, measuring patterns and supporting fittings. Some early-career roles also include drafting simpler patterns or handling production-facing queries.Junior pattern cutter is also used by some businesses for early-career pattern cutting work. The title does not define a consistent level of responsibility, so the work behind it still needs to be established. What matters is what the person has personally completed.Using CAD does not prove independent pattern-development capability. Attending fittings does not establish authority over fit decisions. Completing an amendment is different from deciding what amendment is needed. The brief should show where independent contribution begins and where review remains necessary.
What Should Still Be Checked or Technically Directed?
First-pattern ownership, final fit authority, grading responsibility and pattern approval should not be assumed at Assistant level. The clearer questions are whether work can leave the pattern room without review, whether fitting comments can be translated into changes without checking and which technical decisions still go to the pattern cutter or manager. That does not make the role observational. An assistant can carry meaningful technical responsibility while certain decisions remain checked, approved or escalated. For clients, that prevents the brief drifting into established pattern cutter responsibility. For candidates, it makes clear what they will own and where support remains.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend an Assistant Pattern Cutter?
We establish what the assistant is expected to complete independently, what remains checked and where responsibility passes to someone more experienced. We then assess the evidence behind the title: which patterns the candidate drafted, amended or digitised, what they changed after fittings, what CAD activity they completed and who reviewed their work.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. Some roles include drafting or developing patterns, while others focus more on amendments, blocks, toiles, digitising or support work.
How much fitting responsibility can an assistant pattern cutter have?
An assistant may attend fittings, contribute observations and apply agreed corrections. Whether they diagnose the pattern issue or decide the correction depends on the role.
What is the difference between an assistant and a pattern cutter?
An assistant may complete defined pattern cutting work with some independence while parts of their work still require checking or technical direction. An established pattern cutter typically carries broader independent responsibility for pattern creation, amendment and technical decisions.
Hiring an Assistant Pattern Cutter?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what the person needs to complete independently, what should still be checked and where technical responsibility sits.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering an Assistant Pattern Cutter Role?
Start a conversation about the Pattern Cutting work you already own, where you still receive technical direction and what responsibility you want to develop next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Pattern Cutter Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides senior pattern cutter recruitment as part of our wider pattern cutter recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At senior level, the question is not simply whether someone has more experience. It is whether their technical responsibility is wider, more complex or more authoritative than at established pattern cutter level. Before the search begins, we establish what makes the role senior in practice: the complexity of the product, the decisions the person is expected to make, the problems they are trusted to resolve and where others may escalate work to them. That gives clients a clearer brief and candidates a clearer view of the responsibility the role carries.Key Takeaways

Seniority is not defined by years alone. A senior pattern cutter should be carrying broader or more complex technical responsibility, not simply a larger workload or a longer career history.

The evidence needs to show where responsibility has widened. That may include difficult product or construction, first-pattern development, significant corrections, fitting problems, technical decisions, escalation or supporting less experienced pattern cutters.

A recommendation needs evidence of senior-level pattern cutting responsibility. Encore Recruitment looks at the complexity of work completed, the decisions the person owned and where others relied on their technical input. The candidate also needs a clear view of the role and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Makes a Pattern Cutter Role Senior?
A senior pattern cutter should be handling work that is broader, harder or more consequential than the established pattern cutter remit. That can mean greater product complexity, difficult fabrics or constructions, wider first-pattern responsibility, more significant corrections or a stronger role in resolving technical problems. The exact boundary varies by business, so the senior title alone is not enough.Years of experience, workload and software proficiency do not establish seniority by themselves. The clearer question is: what decisions can this person make, what problems are they trusted to solve and when do other pattern cutters turn to them for technical input?
What Technical Responsibility Can Sit With a Senior Pattern Cutter?
Senior responsibility can include first-pattern development, complex pattern correction, fitting input, technical problem-solving and acting as an escalation point for difficult work.In some businesses, a senior pattern cutter may also check work, support less experienced colleagues or influence how technical issues are resolved across a product area. Those responsibilities still need to be evidenced.Attending fittings does not automatically mean final fit authority. Creating first patterns does not prove final approval responsibility. Supporting colleagues does not necessarily mean line management. The brief should separate independent technical responsibility from formal people or function management. That prevents a senior pattern cutter role from drifting into pattern room manager territory.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend a Senior Pattern Cutter?
We establish what makes the role senior in that business: the technical complexity, decision range, escalation responsibility and influence expected from the person. We then assess the evidence behind the title. That can include difficult garments, first-pattern work, significant corrections, fitting problems, technical decisions, cross-functional communication and examples of where others relied on the candidate’s input.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

Does a senior pattern cutter need to manage people?
No. Some senior pattern cutters may mentor, coach or check the work of others, but formal line management should not be assumed from the title.
Does a senior pattern cutter always own first patterns and fit decisions?
Not always. First-pattern responsibility may be part of the role, while final fit or approval authority can sit elsewhere depending on the business and team structure.
What is the difference between a senior pattern cutter and a pattern room manager?
A senior pattern cutter is defined primarily by wider technical responsibility, complexity and escalation. A pattern room manager moves further into accountability for people, workflow, standards, priorities and pattern room outcomes.
Hiring a Senior Pattern Cutter?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about what makes the role senior in practice, where technical authority sits and which problems the person will be expected to resolve.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Senior Pattern Cutter Role?
Start a conversation about the technical responsibility you already carry, the complexity you handle and where you want that responsibility to develop next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →

Senior Pattern Cutter Hiring

Pattern Room Manager Recruitment

Encore Recruitment provides pattern room manager recruitment as part of our wider pattern cutter recruitment service for fashion and lifestyle businesses across the UK.At pattern room manager level, the question is not simply whether someone is the most senior pattern cutter in the room. It is whether responsibility has moved beyond their own pattern cutting into the people, workflow, standards, priorities and output of the wider pattern room. Before the search begins, we establish how hands-on the role remains, what the manager is expected to control or influence and which decisions still sit elsewhere in the business. That gives clients a clearer brief and candidates a clearer view of the accountability the role carries.Key Takeaways

Pattern room manager is not simply a more senior pattern cutter. The role can still include hands-on pattern cutting, though management responsibility should extend into areas such as workflow, priorities, standards, checking, team development or pattern room output.

Management responsibility needs to be defined. Work allocation, capacity, technical checking, escalation and people development may sit with the Manager, though final authority over every pattern, fit, design or production decision should not be assumed.

A recommendation needs evidence of pattern room accountability. Encore Recruitment looks at what the person has personally controlled or changed: how work was allocated, which standards they maintained, what they checked, which escalations remained with them and how they supported the wider pattern room. The candidate also needs a clear view of the role and to agree to be represented. Only then do we recommend them to the client.

What Makes a Pattern Room Manager Role Different From a Senior Pattern Cutter?
A pattern room manager carries responsibility beyond their own technical work.A senior pattern cutter may handle greater complexity, resolve difficult technical problems and act as an escalation point. A pattern room manager moves further into how work is organised, checked and delivered across the wider pattern room. That can include allocating work, balancing priorities, maintaining technical standards, managing capacity, supporting other pattern cutters and deciding where issues need to be escalated. The role may still remain hands-on. Management responsibility does not mean the person stops cutting patterns, just as senior technical skill alone does not establish pattern room management. The distinction is whether accountability now extends beyond individual pattern cutting into how the room performs.
What Can a Pattern Room Manager Be Accountable For?
Pattern room accountability can include workflow, priorities, technical checking, standards, team development and the quality or reliability of pattern room output. The exact remit varies. One manager may allocate work and check patterns. Another may also oversee blocks, archives, CAD processes or technical development within the team. Cross-functional communication with design, technical, product development or production may also form part of the role.Final authority should not be assumed from the title. Fit decisions, design intent, production decisions or commercial choices may still sit elsewhere. The brief therefore needs to establish what the manager controls, what they influence and where responsibility passes to another function.
How Does Encore Recruitment Assess and Recommend a Pattern Room Manager?
We establish what the manager is expected to control across the pattern room and how much hands-on pattern cutting remains in the role.We then look for evidence of room-level responsibility: how work was allocated, which standards were maintained, what was checked or approved, how bottlenecks or escalations were handled and how other pattern cutters were supported or developed.A recommendation follows clarity on both sides. We assess and qualify who remains before deciding who we are prepared to recommend. The candidate considers the opportunity and decides whether they want Encore Recruitment to represent them for that specific role. You can read more about our recruitment process and the Encore Recruitment Recommendation Standard.
FAQ

Does a pattern room manager still cut patterns?
They can. Some pattern room manager roles remain technically hands-on, while others place more emphasis on workflow, checking, standards and team responsibility. The balance should be established from the actual role.
Does a pattern room manager have final technical authority?
Not automatically. They may hold significant checking or escalation responsibility, though final authority over fit, design, production or other technical decisions can sit elsewhere in the business.
Is a pattern room manager the same as a head pattern cutter?
The titles can overlap in some businesses, though they should not be treated as interchangeable. A head pattern cutter may carry senior technical authority, pattern room management responsibility or both. The brief needs to establish what the person controls across patterns, people, workflow and technical decisions rather than relying on the title.
Hiring a Pattern Room Manager?
Talk to Encore Recruitment about how hands-on the role remains, what the Manager will control and where accountability sits across the Pattern Room.Submit a Vacancy → or Contact Us →
Considering a Pattern Room Manager Role?
Start a conversation about the pattern cutting responsibility you already carry, the teams or workflows you have supported and the wider accountability you want to take on next.View Jobs → or Contact Us →
